Hey guys, The Ol" 48" 8N has been irking me for some time now. I have rebuilt the carb twice already and something is still not right. All new gaskets and cleaned every nook and cranny with small wire brush"s and a air compressor. Pre-adjusted the idle mixture and the main jet to 1 turn out. Fired it up on the first shot. Ran beautiful then starts burning massivly rich and sputtering. I continue to make adjustments and runs great then does the same damn thing. I replaced the needle valve and seat, original float but was in good shape and adjusted it to 1/4" above the gasket surface. New seal on the throttle shaft and all new gaskets. Remember, I went through this twice. I dont know if there is a internal crack or what. I did not see anything. There is no fuel leaking from carb anywhere. I am now seriously considering a aftermarket one. What is everyones opinion on a aftermarket one?

This may have been covered previously but, make sure the seat for the float is screwed all the way in. You need to make a special tool that goes all the way across and grabs the slot on both sides. Sometimes you can use a dime but it will be twisted when you get done. They can be a real pain to get in all the way.

If you had to adjust the float level, this might be your problem.

I like the idea of reinstalling the original needle and seat also, Some of the replacement parts just stink and you are better off not fixing something that ain't broke.

8n, if the needle valve that came with the rebuild kit has a neoprene tip, they are touchy to get set just right. i finally gave up on mine and put the old one back in. RP

Might be time to look at some of Dell's "it ain't yer carb" suggestions, could be electrical, ign. sw., etc., etc..

I'd take it to a rebuild shop before I'd buy a new one....if nothing else, ask them to tell you what was wrong w/it (blame your kid or B-I-L for the bad rebuild) But, before I'd do that, I'd give it one more shot. Get the real carb cleaner that comes in the can w/ a soaking basket & let it soak two or three days. Then, check the jet size; according to a member of this board who is in the tractor parts business, jet size should be 9914 = .049, 9596 = .035 & 9533 = .046. Then, put it back together & add one final step....lay a metal straight edge on both sides of the carb body. If either side is the least bit warped, you are never going to get it to run correctly. Rebuild article on this site is great.

Thank Bruce, I did check with a straight edge the second time around. Was straight as an arrow. I will give it another try. I will get the cleaner with the basket instead of regular carb cleaner in the can. I really appreciate the response. Thank you

Are both sides of the float adjusted equally? Is the float moving freely on the pin?

Yes, Both floats are equal distance. I have installed the neoprene needle valve and now am thinking of putting the old one back in.
