Can anyone lead me in the right direction as to where I can find a set of plowshares for a 2 bottom, 3 pt. hitch Ferguson Type 14 AO-28, 3 hole (not sure what the numbers tell me other than 14"). I am not much of a groundworker but I have always heard of them being called "points". I f anyone can educate me I would appreciate to know if they are the same thing or different.

Thanks for your time and help...

Pat

Pat...here's that # for ScottPA: Scott at Sweigard Bros Inc in Halifax, PA at 717-896-3414 He has all kinds of parts available for the old Ferguson & Ford plows, but get ready for sticker shock. I picked up most of my plow points off of Ebay, but that can take awhile. Are you just needing new points or mouldboards too? Have you tried posting a pic yet? Jeff

Patrick:

I have a used, nearly worn out set that I took off my Ferguson 2x14" plow about a month ago. Aside from the wear, they look just like the ones in the picture below.

You can have them as well as the well worn moldboards that I also replaced if you come and get them.

I'm in IN near Cincinnati, OH.

Dean,

I appreciate your feedback. When you said that your points looked like the ones below, mine don"t look like that. I don"t know if they are overly worn or someone else replaced them with another style. Can you educate me on how to submit a photo and then I can show you.

Thanks,
Pat

Talk to your local blacksmith (if you have one). If you are looking for functionality and not for show, a blacksmith can work wonders with points. Depends on the current condition of the ones you have, assuming you have a set already that maybe just are worn out. My blacksmith used to work mine for me some years ago. If you are near me, I'll see if the fella is still in business if you like. His shop is in Upland, IN.

Patrick:

These are available from TEMPCO among other places but they have become VERY expensive.

The last time I checked they were about $120.00 each. The price did not vary much regardless of where I checked.

Pat....this is the type of plow point you have(based on your #'s).

third party image

There is another type of point that was used on later plows, called a razor share or disposable share.

The one in the pic is NOT a Ferguson point. All I could find in my price range was JD points, I just modified the plow base to accept them.

I'm pretty sure ScottPA can still get the early Ferguson points if you have the $$$. I've got his # around here somewhere.

Pat...1st you have to upload your photo to a hosting site....like this forum's "Gallery" page on the left side of this page, or to a site like Photobucket. Either way it's free & either way the service has instructions.

Click on the appropriate heading on the left & see how it goes.

Jeff,

I added a picture of the points under implements- take a look and let me know your thoughts, or anyone else for that matter. I did find a number on the moldboards, it is 14A AO 112 can anyone use this to tell me the model of the plow or cross reference part numbers???

Thanks,
Pat

Jeff,

I did get a hold of Scott. Looking at $170 a piece- just want to check to see if I can find them elsewhere cheaper. I would be paying more for the points that what I did for the plow. I should have done better research before putting money into them. I have 5 acres that I plow once a year- sure is alot of money with points, moldboards and the cost of the plows ($300) for just 5 acres....

Thanks for the info. on the plows themselves- very insightful..

Pat...I saw your pic in the gallery. Looks like the worn out points I took off my Fergy plow.

You also have the same mouldboard #'s as mine. The "14A" means you have a 14" plow frame w/general purpose base or bottoms(type A). Earlier Ferguson plows w/ the same base were designated type R, not sure why the change.

Your plow model would have been 14-AO-28 or 14-AO-40 depending on how the dealer ordered it. The former came from the factory w/ general purpose bottoms on it, the latter came from the factory w/o bottoms so the dealer could install what the customer asked for(scotch bottoms, slatted bottoms, etc.).

Any 14"(early type)Ferguson point should fit your base, except maybe the scotch-bottom. I'm pretty sure ScottPA can match up a set of points to your mouldboard #'s. Did you talk to him yet?

Jeff,

I submitted a picture of the plows on the implement photo's- would you or anyone else be able to tell me what model of plows they are by looking at them?

Thanks,
Pat

Pat...the points are so worn, I don't think anyone could ID'em from a pic.

There will be a number cast into the back of your shares. You may have to get after'em w/ a wire brush to see it.

You can use a plow share and get it to take the ground until the share wears down so far it will begin to eat into the frog of the plow. Then you got to stop using it or buy a new plow frog and that is the most expensive part of any flat bottom plow.

Cut a three inche slice off a motor grader blace and weld it with the curve of the grader blade pointing downward and with about two or three inches sticking below the tip end of the share. I had to quit doing it to plow shares when we were in the tractor business because it was killing our plow share business. Nobody would by new ones after I fixed their old ones. It will make any plow take the ground no matter how badly worn the share is.

Again though, don't keep using it after the bolts in the frog begin to drag the ground or you will ruin the plow. It'll just keep on plowing till the share litterally falls off when the bolt holes are gone in the frog.

Hobo, I believe you. I used to drive through Siler City on my way to Ft. Bragg from Virginia. I always looked around to see if I could spot Francis Bavier, too (aka Aunt B). Never did, though.

Indiana, she moved to Siler City and bought a house, and lived out her remaining years as pretty much a recluse. I worked in Siler City for a number of years and never saw anyone who ever saw her. If ye go to the Denton Threshers Reunion, held every 4th of July week, ye can see the Studebaker she owned when she passed away. The owners of the Farm Park bought it for display. They have a great show with lots of old iron each year, just wear ye walking shoes or bring something to ride or rent one there.

I see. I get down that way every so often. My brother is a Wilmington police officer and my Dad is retired and lives in Boone. My other brother is currently attending Appalachian State. One of my sisters lives near Raleigh.
