1953 Jubilee... Push rod cover was leaking a little so I in my infinite wisdom decide to replace the gasket. I get the gasket made by TISCO and this thing is one huge block of cork in the shape of the PR cover. Says on the front fits all tractors 53-60 something gas or diesel. I don't like the way it looks to start with and it doesn't have the rubber groumets for the bolts either. The old gasket didn't look this way, it was like a gasket is suppose to look.
Ok now heres the dilemma do you cut this darn thing down to size so it will fit behind your distributor and hyd pump or can you buy a gasket like the one that came on it. And if I take the hyd pump off and pull the dist will they go back on. The gasket seems to be too darn thick.. Any help appreciated here.....

You told me several times that the NH gasket was thinner but I couldn't comprehend it I guess. My mind is bad,,,,

Randall,

I replaced the push rod cover gasket in Dad's 640 a short time ago. Both motors are similar. This is what the old gasket looked like:

The new one looks the same. It was about 1/2 the thickness as the rocker arm/valve cover gasket. It didn't come with grommets for the bolts cause I think you have to buy them separate (#6589). I believe these were furnished as a kit when you purchased an engine overhaul gasket kit. I got my gasket at the local New Holland dealer.

I'm not sure why they don't cut the center out of that gasket. Maybe the center part adds stability to the center of the push rod cover. I had no problem, thickness wise, installing it in combination with the cover behind the distributor and pump.

I'm sure someone else has more insight than I do.

Thanks for the input Tyler. On my Jubilee, which as you said is pretty much a twin to the 640, the darn gasket and cover will not go down behind the pump. And it requires some force to get it behind the dist. I really don't want to attempt the "bigger hammer" theory since I plan to paint over this cover one day and would rather not have to do body work on one of the few straight panels on this thing(push rod cover). If I do remove the pump is there a trick to aligning the gear drive or is pretty much straightforward????

I notice Tyler's 640 has a piston pump. Is your Jubilee pump a piston pump or vane pump? Maybe the clearance is different with a vane pump? Just a guess.

Would it fit behind there with a thinner gasket?
If so, I'd get the other gasket and not have to fool with the removal of the pump.

JMHO,

Mine is also a piston pump and most likely it would fit with a thinner gasket. This is one of those deals where ifn it ain't broke don't fix it. After I saw Tyler's work on his dad's 640 I got motivated a little and decided to fix some leaks and other odds and ends. This was an "ends" I should have stuck with the "odds". It was unclear to me but does anyone know of a thinner gasket. The one that came off was just like the valve cover gasket(which is now new and not leaking) this new one looks like the Jolly Green Giant's shoe sole or something.

Like I said before, the new gasket I got from New Holland was half as thick as the valve cover gasket.

Take care,
Tyman

I ordered one from Walts (grommets seperate) and it fit ok. It's still a little tricky manuvering it all down there, but the cover doesn't touch the pump or distributer once it's in place. DON'T start beating on the cover to try and make clearance space. Once that cover is bent it will never give you a good seal.

HTH, John
