I was plowing the otherday with my 8N and was working it pretty hard, I thought I hard some pinging or some knocking coming from the engine. Now when I use my finish mower I feel I've had a loss of power and still have that pinging noise coming from the engine when it's under a load, It doesn't do it in a idle mode. Also some over heating problems. Any body got any answers?

While your messin with the timing, check the dist. weights under the points plate. Something may have gotten under the plate and interfering with the weights. HTH

What's your oil pressure like?

Have you dinked with timing?

What makes you think it is overheating..

post back.

Thanks for your reply. I never really thought about the timing and I have monkeyed around with the distributor turning it. The overheat issue is obvious; there's steam pouring out of my radiator cap, however, the belt is slipping, which could contribute to that. Do you have any hints on setting the timing properly on this tractor? Do I need a gun? Oil pressure drops down to about ten when engine's under strain and is about twenty five to thirty on start up.

Your oil pressure is sufficient for now.

I think you need to grab your service manual and get back to timing.

Can't remember if this was a front or side mount.. if front mount you wil need a straight edge , manual and your distrib. if a side mount, there will be timing marks on the flywheel.. etc.

belt slipping can cause overheat problems.. fix it!

That's good new's if the timing is off, and that's giving me a loss of power. I really never would of thought about that because the tractor sounds fine when it's in idle or throttled up a little, without and load on engine. I have a love hate relationship with this tractor... I've named it tinkerbell ! Can you guess why ? I really don't want to buy a tractor now, I feel I'll spend $6.000 to get anything decent.
