Re your comment: "A worn engine with multi-vis oil may lose its oil pump prime if it sits a while." My 1948 8N engine was overhauled 28 years ago. I use 40 wt. oil. High oil pressure at start up; after an hour's running 12 lbs or so and 5 at idle. Runs and sounds fairly good. No smoke. Use abt, 4 or 5 times p/mo. spring and summer and 1 or 2 times rest of year. (Moderate CA climate.) Was thinking of using 20W-50. Bad idea? Thanks in advance. Angelo

And your motivation is? The benefit of multi-grade oils is that they pump faster in COLD weather and get to vital engine parts faster than a single grade. If you don't have COLD weather you won't see any real benefit. FWIW the grade designation 20W50 means the viscosity of the oil is SAE 20 at 0C and SAE 50 at 100C. Your single grade is tested to be SAE 40 at 100C and ungraded but surely a lot more viscous at 0C. Unless you see temps significantly below 50F on a regular basis I'd stay with the SAE 40 given your pressures.

Here is the key point: "....if it sets a while." I hate to add a time....but I'm thinking two or three weeks between use. The oil pump is not submerged in the oil; multi-vis oil is really the lower weight w/ additives to provide the higher weight properties. A worn oil pump & thin oil could result in a loss of prime. Not fatal....if you catch it quickly!

My self I would stay with the 40W oil. You have good oil preassure now but if you went to a mutil weight oil you might loose that good preassure.

Honestly, I don't think I would change, not until I did a full rebuild, and I would be expecting to do that soon, before I had messed up parts that couldn't be easily replaced.
