8N, 6V, Coil Question

Hey guys,

I just bought a new coil for my '51 (6-volt system still in place, and will remain in place) at the New Holland dealer. The guy behind the counter didn't seem too familiar with the old machines, but he went to the shelves and got a coil for me. I'm wondering if it's the correct coil... it's marked "27310 USE WITH EXTERNAL RESISTOR" and the box says it's part number E8TF12029BA. Is this the right coil? I don't think there's a resistor shown in the wiring diagram in the FO manual... unless I overlooked it.

Thanks,

Andy

Andy..... .that is a generic sidemount ignition coil and if'n you had a 12 volt system, then yes, you would need to use an external resistor.

BUT SINCE you still have the OEM 6 volt system, then NO, you really don't need an external resistor.

Remember, there should be little +'s and -'s on the coil terminals, and since your 8N should be positive ground, then connect the + to the battery + thru the distributor points and the - to the ignition switch.

Ford/NH parts is trying to save dollars on paperwork with incomplete instructions, assuming the installer is an experienced mechanic and knows all about electrics..... ...Dell
