how to remove reflector in road, bent my backblade

I live on a suburban road that has road reflectors in the center lane spaced about every 50'. These reflectors are curved with the traffic to allow tires and snowplows to easily go over. However, the other side is a sharp corner which rises about 3/4" above the road. As I was pushing snow backwards at speed across the road with my 8N this winter I hit the reflector, bent my backblade, and jared the heck out of me and everything else. Anyone know how to remove on of these darned reflectors? I would patch the retangular hole after removal. Thank you. Philip.

They have some blue ones on my street marking the fire plugs. About a foot from the edge of the road. My blade scraped it right up while plowing snow. Oppps forgot they were there...LOL

Josh, I am afraid to tell now. I got a few replies below from men who sounded out with more conservatism than my mother-in-law. They may turn me in, or are you the snitch! I work in Johnson County and live on the southern boarder of Marion County near Johnson and Shelby Counties. My Mother is from Switzerland and Jefferson Counties. Philip.

I have had job offers in both Texas and Mexico and talked with my Wife about moving there. I love both places. She said I (we, including kids) could not live without a little snow, and that I would get bored not be able to use my tractors as much because of the drier climates. We will see as life goes on. I have to agree with the other replies. it is dot property and were put there for the driving public safty. sorry it is in front of your driveway. but if you knew it was there it isnt dot responsibility to replace your blade. just costly mistake. maybe next time dot crew is out replacing the reflector on a hot day a case of beer may take care of your problem.

Phil, in MN it not legal to push snow across a roadway (not that many don't still do it!) and most places don't want you doing any plowing on the road..

So many times, the plowers leave a mess and ridges of snow across and these can freeze and pose a traffic hazard.

But go ahead and do what you want... until the Sheriff has a word with you...

It is illegal to plow snow across the road in Indiana too. I push it well acoss the road into a large pile into the field and clean up the mess because it is in front of my driveway. I then push the snow along the side of the road so the snow plow cannot build as much of a mound in front of my driveway the next time they plow. I also make a nice clean out for the mailman. In case you cant tell, like others here, I am obsesssed with snow plowing and like to show off with a clean and tidy area. Philip.

That is DOT property and cost the taxpayers to have it installed. If ye have a problem contact them, you could be charged for removing or damaging the road. Explain your problem to them and they should respond if it is legitimate.

Well, it just cost me a new $500 backblade and they will not pay for that. I thought about contacting them, but my experience shows how far that will go. Call, wait, call again, wait, never gets to the right person, and the answer is no. I would do a very good patch job since the hole would be right in front of my diveway. Thank you for your concerns. If I need a bail bondsman can I call you? Respectfully, Philip.

Philip,

I bought a badly bent blade. Someone had set it up offset and hooked a fence post. It was so rusted that I could not tell the original color.

I took the blade apart, removed the harded edge, propped it up in my forge, built the largest forge fire I have ever used and heated the bend orange hot. Pulled it out (with help from the wife), laid it on the anvil, and beat on it until it was straight. Wire wheeled everything, primed, painted, and reassembled. The whole process in the forge took about an hour.

My BOL thought I had bought a new one. He could not believe that that rusted and bent pile of junk was the same blade.

You might try finding a blacksmith. You would be surprised how easily steel bends at an orange heat.

Good luck,

Cliff (VA)

The last drunk driver ye met on the road at night might have been on his side of the road because of that reflector, or the cars ye meet on a rainy night might be on their side of the road because of the refledtors when ye headlights blinded them. We have those same reflectors in the road in front of my house. They are epoxied in with some very strong epoxy. Rather than try to remove them, I would try to either build up the road surface some or grind off the edge so that either way there is some slope that your blade could ride up on. Some places (Home Depot) have bags of asphalt patching that you might try. Heat the surface of the road and add some tar before applying.

Sounds like a “midnight” job to me.
Good luck!

YES! That was my first thought too! Why spend good money to replace something thats only BENT? Shoot, bent aint even broke yet! If it was me I might even try turning the blade around and hitting the thing again to straighten it, GRIN!!

I just plow until the front tires are at the end of the driveway, then turn around and start the back blade at the edge of the road going back to the house. If I get done first, the snow plow dude will usually try not to block the drive when he goes by.

The way the TX DOT removes them during re-paving is to chop them out with a flat-nosed pick. One swing with the pick, hitting the asphalt right at the edge of the reflector, and a short prying-motion and it pops right out. After re-paving they grind out a shallow depression and epoxy it right back in.
But I wouldn't do it without the local DOT engineer's approval, unless you like the idea of spending money in court and on lawyers for destruction of public property.
