Jubilee-hard starter

First, I don't know s%$& about tractor mechanics, so please, answer this like you're talking to the idiot I am. There, I feel better already.

My 53 Jubilee has been a hard starter since I got it. Now it doesn't want to start at all. I'm about to get new plugs and a battery, but one thing I've notice that concerns me. After a little bit of cranking without success, the big cable to the starter begins to smoke. It's really hot and the insulation is melting at the connector. Is this normal or a sign that something more significant is bad? I'm planning to replace the cable, but what else might be happening? Maybe a new battery will solve all my problems, but I'd appreciate any advice. What I really need is a buddy down the street who knows about tractors and has lots of time on his hands.

Thanks in advance. -Jack

My Jubilee used to be very hard to get started...would crank and crank and finally, about when you expect the battery to be dead, it would catch with a cloud of smoke and start. The solution in my case was simple...the carb was flooding while the tractor sat idle and the replacement sediment bowl/shut off valve didn't comletely stop the flow of gas. I cleaned up and reinstalled the original sediment bowl/valve and now, as long as I don't forget to shut off the fuel at the end of the day, the tractor starts in the first couple of turns of the engine.

If your Jubilee is a 6 volt system, obtain and install battery and starter cables made for 6 volt systems. They are much larger in diameter than those on 12 volt systems. Clean up all of your electrical connections within the starting circuit and make certain that all of the wires and cables are tightly fastened. Consider replacing your solenoid relay; they have a tendency to cause slow cranking and will fry your cables along the way. If all else fails, pull your starter and clean the mating surfaces down to bare metal between the starter face and the bell housing. You may, in fact, have a weak starter, but it is less expensive to do the above before you have to take your starter to an armature shop to have it serviced. Hope this helps. Enjoy your Jubilee!

Check the wire size on the battery cable,The ohv engine starts easy.My 600 starts in cold weather. It can be slow to warm up but it starts easy in zero weather.

Jack : Start with the common sense stuff...If your car was doing this, you'd already have come to the conclusion that you need a tune up. Make sure all your electrical connections are clean and tight, replace any burned up wires. Plugs, rotor , cap, condenser, plug wires....clean all 3 fuel screens, clean out & adjust your carb. Approach it as a fun way to spend the day...

Your tractor is 54 years old...Betcha if you give it a day of TLC, you'll see another 50 out of it.

If only a specific part of the battery cable setup is getting HOT; there's a poor connection at the point that's heating up; amongst any other problems you may have.

A lot of times when that happens it means your starter is getting weak and need rebuilt. Any good auto part store will test it for free. Just take it off and take it in to have it checked.

A twelve-volt conversion, perhaps?

Here is a thread which ran a few days ago. It concerns a problem similar but not identical to yours. You may benefit from reading it.

It"s kind of embarrasing for me to point it out, because ultimately I made a fool out of myself; but that"s not important right now; what IS important is getting your Jubilee started.
