I just got my new starter drive. I was checking it out and I turned the starter drive out and its locked there. Is there any way to unlock it?
Thanks, RDAllison

I did mine and actually got it installed without retracting it. It can be done.

I"ve also done it. I just installed it the way it was and it set itself on the first start. No noise or anything strange.

I did the same thing to mine also. When I couldn't get it back I just installed in on my 1947 2-n in the extended position. I really don't remember having much trouble doing that. The first time I started the motor it went back in. It sure works great.

You will need a long lead pencil and a lot of patience to do it. Turn the drive all the way out. There will be a little detent. Break off the tip of the pencil in that hole. Then try to turn the drive back in. If it doesn't work, sharpen the pencil and do it again. This is why you need a long pencil to start with. One customer turned his out 3 times and after showing him how to put it back in twice, I figured it was his responsibility.

You must be a parts man! I used to sell those drives and 9 times out of 10, the customer would fool around with it and lock it out. They'd do it right there at the counter after I told them NOT to spin it out. The pencil trick works great, but I even had a few of them come back a second time for another pencil job.

I have to laugh out loud every time I read where someone "played with their starter and it retracted". Of course, I did the same thing. It can been spun with a wire wheel, but I couldn't get it to work for me. I took it apart to reset mine. I don't remember off hand, but it seem's like I had to reset a pin to retract it. That's all I remember. Sorry. LOL

Ok folks, time to fess up!!!

Is there anyone that has ever replaced one, that hasn't done it?

I know I did, and I know the wire brush CAN work.

It was so long ago that I don't remember exactly what I did to put it back in.

I do remember the panic attack I had at first though.

LMAO!!

I did mine too and spent a long long long time getting it back and then I found this site. I think I wedged a pice of plastic film inside to hold a pin or somthing.
