I have a 1951 8n that I am rebuilding the engine. my question is where can I find the damn tools to adjust the tappets the local dealers gave me the usual (Good luck). Or is there a simple way to do this that the old timers might let be known? One fellow suggested drilling a 1/8"hole through the tappet chamber w/engine assembled
does anyone have a better idea? I have tried most all of my farm boy technology
including the 90 jesus clip pliers, any suggestion willbe most appreciated

Thank you on

I wouldn't bother with the wrenches, instead go with the drilled push rods. They are very easy to adjust when you need to tweek the valves for a tractor pull!

Apparently most rebuilt engines include the 1/8" hole trick; mine was that way already, made things real easy. Just use a nail (with the point dulled) to "lock" the tappet so you can adjust it with a 7/16" ignition wrench.

I had hell getting the valves out to lap them; tried the notched screwdriver without much luck. What worked the best was one of those 90 degree screwdrivers, which aren't too uncommon I think (found one in my Dad's toolbox). With it I could lever the valve down enough to pull out the clip without even tugging...

I and others have made our own tools for adjusting the valves, I took an old screw driver, cut the tip off, then heated it and bent a sharp 90 about a 1/4" from the tip, Then I welded a small nut on the bottom side back about 1/4" from the bend, with this set up you can keep the lifter from turning while adjusting it, You'll also have to find an old 1/4" open end wrench and grind down the edges so it will fit the lifter nut.

later,dave
