Single Wire Generator Replacement

I have what I think is a 6V 3 brush single wire
generator on my 12 volt 2N. The battery is not
charging and the generator got so hot last week that it burned me when I touched it.

I have a 12 volt battery, a twelve volt coil and a 12 volt ballest resistor.

My question is this - If I replace the old original generator, what do I replace it with, also since I have a single wire generator, what wiring differences do I have with a modern 12 volt alternator (I'm assuming).

Thank You,

Chuck

Claus & ED are right, a one-wire alternator would work fine. All you'd do is mount the alternator, remove the cutout relay (just splice the wires together) and connect the wire that used to go to the generator to the alternator's BAT terminal (the big one on the back).

The biggest problem is getting the mounting brackets (they'll come with a kit if you buy one).

If you want to get by for a lot cheaper, you can fabricate your own brackets and use a salvage yard alternator (the additional wiring for a standard alternator isn't much).

It depends on how handy you are and how much scrounging you want to do.

They sell single wire alternators. (You need to rev them a little before they charge) As far as wiring is concerned, you would run 1 wire from the alternator to the 12 volt tie point on the termial board. It is hard to muck that up.
Happy Motoring

I think if it is a single wire alternator you should be okay.

Maybe Claus will play a visit
