I'm asking for a friend. From what I am told, it seems that 1st and second gears are not there but you can use 3rd and 4th. He was told that 1st was a problem so it was removed and as a result 2nd is lost as well..... Does this sound right? Now, assuming that nothing else is busted, how big a job is it to get 1st and second replacement gears in there? Thanks

Something doesn't sound right about that. The tranny needs to come out and apart to put gears in; so why on earth would someone take the tranny out and apart just to take some bad gears OUT, yet reassemble the thing without 1st and 2nd??? I don't get it.

Take the top cover off. Maybe it's actually a problem with the shift mechanism rather than the gears themselves.

Thanks for all responses. We'll pull the top cover first and try to see what is going on.

He just got the tractor. It was his Grandfather's tractor so he knows nothing about what has been done, just what he is told. But since he has had it(2months) he has not had the tranny cover off. What does he need to look for once the cover is off? Thanks

Every bolt from the clutch housing to the differential housing mating surface must be removed to put a gear in or out of the 8N transmission. Lots of bolts!

It is running better but sputters some at low throttle and at part throttle cruising. With a little more throttle it smooths out OK and is not running too rich now??? Don't know why??? May not have been the problem to begin with???? May have been the throttle position sensor???? It had a very loose connector and I put a wire tie on it to hold it on. Those connectors and wire should have been used on tinker toys! I have it sitting in the front yard by the highway for sale. Looks good. Got any suckers you can send me??? I give kick backs! :O)
