Hi everybody, have any of you ever rebuilt a generator?

My 2N (still 6 volt) generator was making a funny noise like a bad bearing. I gave it a couple of drops of oil and that seemed to quiet it down but before long I noticed I was no longer charging. When I looked closely I saw the generator wasn't turning and boy the pulley was really hot when I touched it. Not sure if that was cause the belt was still going around on the pully (I do not have a tensioner on it), or because the bearing inside it got hot when it 'siezed'.

I'm not sure if the whole generator is fried or just the bearing. I can still turn it but I can tell it is not as free as it should be. And I did smell that 'burnt wiring' kind of smell at one point.

I see you can buy a generator rebuild kit pretty inexpensively, is it hard to do? Or should I just spring for an already rebuilt unit?

From your description, I'd almost guarantee you smoked a bearing. The heat was from the belt slipping on the pulley and the smell was the belt burning. Rebuilding it is pretty easy. Buy the kit. This board can answer any questions you may have in the process.

Ok Thanks!

I guess I will go out to the garage and take it apart.
