The M/S carbs don't wear out.

Unlike QuadraJets that have the vacuum actuated metering valves.

Did I say these carbs don't wear out?

Worst case scenario, is an idiot that screwed one up of his own accord.

The need to be clean though.

And have all passagews unstopped.

I used to do what Brent does - buy old ones off eBay, clean and rebuild them, then sell them again on eBay. It costs nothing to soak them for a day in carb dip, blow the passages out, install new jets, and replace stuff that are missing or worn (i.e. top studs, choke flaps, etc.). Then I throw a rebuild kit in em and list them for what I have in them. Usually I will get about $20 - $50 extra depending on demand. Old nasty used ones are just getting to expensive now to be worth it IMO - plus my workload has recently increased and time is harder to find.

While you will not get rich doing this, I actually enjoyed the labor (it is a relaxing hobby), and it gave me money to buy the tractor parts I needed without momma getting upset :-)

Overall - I would say you can indeed trust carbs you buy off eBay - out of the 40 or so originals I have obtained, only one was shot (previous owner tried to drill out the jets and wiped the threads out of the base) - and even that one the seller refunded my money as it is scrap metal at that point. Expect to buy and install a rebuild kit in ANY used carb you buy unless the seller offeres a guarantee. And BTW - I prefer originals on my antique tractors. Sure, you may need to fiddle with it more to get it to run right, but I have heard bad stuff about the new ones also.

HTH,
Dan

I looked at them on Ebay but bought one off of this site (the gold one). Right out of the box it fired right up and only required the tiniest of tweaking to adjust the idle.

The gold colored ones are the better carbs, new carbs are new carbs. You kin git a bad part, new, rebuild, or OEM. I did have a major problem wif the black colored carbs so I stay away from them, to much werk to git'em rite I have a new one and if the buyer wishes I run it on my own tractor B for I ship it. Course I charge for the service. That B'n said I would not B skeered to order one from this site.

Depends a lot on who the seller is, what condition it is in etc. My self I would not buy one from e-bay if I wanted one ready to bolt on and work correwctly. Now if I didn't mind haveing to put a kit in it etc ya I might. My self I would buy from this site and or valuebilt since both places sell rebuilt carbs with warrentys on them

From a dedicated e-bayer's perspective? Critical components I buy new. Need a gas cap or a lift arm or something that can be readily appraised as to quality from a grainy photo taken on a cloudy day from 50 feet away behind a bush...go for it.
I still get burned now and again. Amazing what a camera angle can do.
