As I am taking the front end of my 9 apart, I notice a hole thru the grill, under the radiator and back to the crankshaft pulley. Looks like they designed this to be hand cranked if necessary. As I am only 40, I have never seen an engine started by hand cranking(except in pictures) Was this a common backup procedure and did the original tractors come with a hand crank as part of original equipment? Anyone started one this way?

Yes the crank was one of the tool items that came with the N tractor.

I have a tractor calendar with a handcranked tractor on it. Inside the grill is what appears to be some kind of padded forearm guard that's stored there.

The war years 2Ns were supposed to be cranked. I hear that they did not have a battery due to the war effort. I have not started mine with a crank, but do not wrap your thumb around the crank. lay it alongside of your index finger and cup your hand loosely(!) around the handle. Then pull up in a swift motion and clear out. If it backfires it will break your wrist/forearm if it catches you. My uncle can testify to this, I know it by local legend.

Do you know if the crank tool ever stuck in the tractor after it started, or did they normally just fall out?

Never heard of it happening. (And that includes the Model A and the Model T) the attachment of the crank is a slip fit and the dogs that hold the spur which is on the side of the crank near the inserted end of the crank are tapered so that when the engine turns over the crank is thrown out by centripital (not centrifigual) force. (see, I did stay awake in High School) I lost the crank to the Model A 30 years ago when I lent it to my cousin so we cant try a cross-fit but it would be interesting...

"My toy" has a front end (wagner) loader. This is where the hydralic pump is mounted.

Where would you get a hand crank?

Have seen them on eBay, listed for model T's and A's. Don't know if they fit the 'N or not. I think theres a good chance they do.

When I asked that question several months ago, the consensus was that the N and auto cranks are different. I believe the N crank has a longer shaft and possibly a different fitting to engage the pulley.

Started my 8N with the crank one whole summer when my ring gear was gone. Worked well.

Yes, not on 9N, but have started some others that way. Also, useful mostly for things like turning engine for other reasons, such as setting point gap. If used for starting, pull up from bottom, don't push down, to avoid injury.
