Does anyone like the 6 volt pos. ground electronic ignition conversion packages. There are 2 offers addvertised on this board: one at $89.00 another around $149.00. I am tired of fighting points and replacing rotor caps.

i keep replacing caps because the #3 and 4 contacts get grooved.
This tractor was in a collision so strong that it cracked the bottom of the upper steering housing. I would have thought that a dist. as compact as an N and protected by the radiator would survive an impact without warping.Something is obviously out of plumb but I do not know what part to replace, unless i replace the whole dist.
Oddly enough it runs for a couple years before replacing the cap, by then something else has gone wrong. I have pos

You didn't say why you are replacing your cap so often. If #2 nipple is breaking, you have a worn out kingpin and bushing in your front axle.

My 1950 8n hasn't had new points in 12 years, and new cap and rotor for more than 20 years.
I'd be looking to see just what the problem is with your points and cap....
DELL.. feel free to insert ref to a "weak sister" here...
But i did install a high quality key switch about 20 years ago also.

Kurt..... ..theres 2-kinds of 6-volt positive ground electronic ignition systems. One for the more conventional roundcan 5-nipple sidemount distributor. (I can change the points for $5 in 5-mins)

Then theres the expensive "weird-one", the 4-nipple squarecan frontmount distributor. (I can change the points for $5 in 15-mins on the kitchen table)

You doubt? The frontmount distributor is held on by 2-bolts and driven by an OFF-SET cam-drive tab and you can NOT re-install outta time. Isn't that amazing?

And more importantly, the guttz to the 6-volt electronic ignition package are EXTREMELY SENSITIVE to voltage level. (itza technical thing) and wanna guess what happens to the battery volts when yer draggin' yer starter motor? Wanna guess what won't sparkle??? Wanna guess iff'n nasty old fashioned points will start even with weak battery???

Remember the 6-volt MANTRA: "keep'em CLEAN and brite'n'tite"..... ..Dell 40yrs, Electronics Engr who has electronic ignition on his 12-volt 1969 BMW 2002 with non-stock 165hp 7500rpm OHC 4-cyl dual Weber semi-racing engine

1.) There's NO reason a good set of points shouldn't last ten years with occasional use. Don't take my word for this; ask ZANE and Dan Hill; amongst others.

2.) How do you figure the EI conversion will help with cap/rotor breakage???

We're all told constantly, that everything that is newer and more complicated is automatically better and cannot possibly fail to do a better job.

Thus, your old analog cell phone, that got a little noisy occasionally but rarely dropped a call, has been replaced by a completely digital one that drops calls all the time when the network is busy.

It's also why the inexpensive, non-toxic, dependable light bulb is being replaced by an expensive and temperamental device full of mercury vapor that you will have to carry to a toxic waste disposal site to throw away (and pay for the privilege).

And, finally, thus the COMPLETE failure of most computerized communications systems used by professional and municipal organizations after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, in spite of the fact that human beings talking into old-fashioned analog short wave radios (all unpaid amateur volunteers, by the way, which INFURIATED the bureaucratic side of said organizations) continued to communicate just fine.

I'll stick with points, thank you.

Actually; I like electronic ignitions... My point was that going to EI would NOT solve all the problems the original poster was having and he would be disappointed.
