Hey fellas, don't mean to ask a dumb question, but my back wheels wobble on my 8n. Is it possible that while I'm mowing for my wheel to fall off?

My 49 8N was like that the whole 20+ years I have had it up until the last few months.

Hub nuts tight as I could get them.

Hubs were worn slap out!!

Got new ones for $45 each, I even have the oil stopped from getting on the brakes so far.

Alex,
Two Thoughts - You write: “I finish mow in third gear full throttle.” The PTO speed on the N series tractor is directly related to the throttle position. It is my understanding that most folks on this board mow at about 2/3 or ¾ throttle to avoid spinning the PTO faster than the mower was designed for. This causes shortened gearbox and belt life. I believe the current standard is 540 RPM for the PTO speed, hoever, these tractors were made before this standard existed.
Next Thought –
You Ask – “Do I just need to tighten the nut and always inspect the nut before and clip before taking off?” If it were my tractor, I’d jack up one side, check the lug nuts and axle nut. If loose, I’d remove, clean, and replace torque correctly. Don’t forget about the clip on the outside of the axle nut! If they aren’t loose and you still have a wiggle, post back and let us know.

Alix..... ...notta dumb question, shows yer paying attention but just lack experience.

Heres the deal; that BIG NUTT hassta be TIGHT. 450ft/lbs TIGHT. Grabb the top of yer reartire and shake-itt sidewize while watching yer BIG NUTT. See enny motion down there??? Time to re-tighten.

Most people don't wanna tie-up $600 for 3/4" torque wrench, go rent one. Simple, eh?

I don't 'cuz I gotta a calibrated BIG GRUNT!!! I have a 4ft long 3/4-breaker bar with 2in socket that I use. It hurt me to buy that new, I found it USED. You can't OVERTIGHTEN that big nutt, don't worry; grunt away. (tip: remove the spring-lock wire inna groove first)

Now then iff'n re-tightening yer BIG NUTT don't solve yer shaker-test. Then its NOT'CHUR bearings, its yer tapered 6-spline HUB. $50 (cheap) ..... ..Dell

One of the things to check when buying a used tractor is rear wheel looseness. You grab the top of the tire as you face it, and pull it to you and push it back. If there is any free play then something is wrong. It could be as simple as loose lug nuts in your case, or it could be more serious. Tighten all the lug nuts, and the center nut. It should be torqued to 450 ft lbs, which means using a breaker bar and a pipe extension. If you don't fix it, the hub threads will strip and you could face a hub replacement (not cheap!).
Good luck!
Carl

Loose lug nuts?

Loose hub / axle nut?

Fix it quick.. loose hubs wear out FAST.

Alex,
Yes, it is possible, and you hear of it from time to time on this board. It has even happened to me! You’ll want to find out why it’s wobbling and fix it before the wobbling wears out anything else.
In my case the clip that held on my axle nut came off and my axle nut then fell off. I was able to jack up the tractor, clean everything up and re-attach the tire. That nut is a 2 inch nut and needs to be tightened to either 200 or 400 foot pounds (I can’t remember witch right now, someone will come along shortly who knows exactly).
There are other possible problems more involved than the nut, but that’d be a good place to start!

Same thing happened to me. Didn't tighten it enough when it happened. Did it again. I'm to used to tightening a bearing then backing it off a tad. After tightening it correctly it's been several years with no problem.

If everything checks out ok and your lug nuts and hub are secure, don't overlook the possiblity of bent rims.

If the rims ARE bent, you're going to find out why the king of the local collectors used to say, "The wheels make or break the deal."
