I brought my '50 8N side mount 6volt back to the house after using it for a few hours. When I throttled down, it didn't slow down to the normal slooow idle. I checked & the idle speed adjustment screw wasn't returning to the stop as it should. There is about 5/16" of slack, & to get it to slow down, I hafta push the screw in with my finger. Any ideas on how to remove the slack? Not a big deal, like the peanut butter cookies, but..... ( BIG GRIN )

Worn governor balls; or a failed thrust bearing in the governor will cause the governor to "lose control" of the carburetor; down to slow idle.

First I would disconnect the rod from the governor and hold it in the closed position with a rubber band if needed. Then I would open & close the thottle by hand a little and see if it still hangs up.If it does I would take the carburetor off and reset the THOTTLE PLATE after backing off the screw that sets the low speed. You would set it by tapping it lightly while setting it to the fully closed position in the bore. You may also have a governor problem.  Found it! Thanx, guys. in reply to CENTAUR, 04-04-2007 14:05:00
Both governor levers are loose. The one that connects to the carb linkage has forward & rear slack, & not letting the idle speed adjuster return to the stop. Looks like it's time for new needle bearings & or shims.

Poot---try lengthening the long rod that goes from the governor to the hand throttle arm assembly---

Doing that applies more "back" pressure (toward the driver) on the short rod from the governor to the carb.

That in turn pushes your idle adjusting screw down to the stop which might be part or all of the problem----just fixed the same issue on one of my 8N's a few weeks ago.

I also had worn spots on the gov. balls that was a part of the problem---Tim

Poot---glad to here that my suggestion fixed your problem---

You say "there is a steel "donut" that slides back & forth on the rod..."...what does it do?"

I believe you are asking about one of the 2 governor rods? If so, There should not be anything at all sliding back and forth on the rods....however, that doesn't mean that a P.O. didn't improvise up a sliding weight system rigged up "donut fixum trick" to try to solve the problem you were having.

If the donut is on the short rod, he/she may have thought the xtra weight would help push the idle adjustment screw down--remember when you pushed the screw "down" on your tractor it would idle better?

Without a pic of this "donut" MY wild guess could be that one of the long rods ends just wore out, slipped over the springy thing inside of it, and is just joy riding up and down the rod. You would see that the long rod then would not have a complete adjustable tip on the end where it fastens to the governor and the hand throttle arm.

The short rod ends are not adjustable.

I would be interested in seeing a pic of this "donut" though. ----Tim
