I tried to post this message earlier - here we go again. I have an 8n that I bought recently. It did not run when I bought it. I redid the carb carb and distributor with some great input from thi sight. I started. I ran it only a few minutes. Friday I pulled a bone head move. I ran it at idol for 20 minutes and then drove it for a minute. It started running sluggish and then I notice smoke POURING out of the oil filler hole. I immediately shut it down. It will not restart. My neighbor, who is very mechnaical, took a quick in the dark look at it. He said it could be a piston ring....or something else. Anyone care to take a stab? The tractor sat idol (I was told) for ten years before I bought it.

Could be a head gasket as someone else posted but with all of that as you call smoke coming out of the oil breather I'm thinking you may have a cracked block. Did the tractor freeze with no antifreeze.

Most likely not. It was down one gallon of antifreeze and it was low because I drained some a month ago (with anticipation of re-filling after I repalced the hoses (which I did not do and subsequently forgot to refill what I drained)) read.....bone-head/turkey/etc.

I do not know what this tractor went through before it sat up for ten years or what it faced in the ten years that it sat up. I do not it was in a barn in Gonzales, Texas and I have had it in east Texas since I bought it in Houston. It has been subjected to short-term cold spells since I bought it in December, but nuthin like what you would expect up north.

if it set for 10 years you prob. have stuck rings and valves all over the place.put a couple ounces of auto tranny fluid in each sparkie hole and let her set for 4 or 5 days, then try her again. RP

I did this right when I bought it. Should I do it again under the circumstances?

Anvilhead..... ..sounds to me like it is time for the dreaded compression test. Ford specs: 90psi min (dry) Do a dry then wet test and you'll have a better handle on it. Post yer readings iff'n you don't know how to interpret them. I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife..... ..Dell

Sound to me like you let the smoke out of a rod / main bearing.

Did it have oil pressure while it was running?

Yes, there was oil pressure. Admitingly, there was a low coolant situation going on - hence the bone head move. However, the tracor idoled for only twenty minutes.

Quote: "It will not restart."

Meaning what, exactly? Possiblities include but are not limited to:

(1) Will not turn over at all. (What International Harvester manuals refer to rather laconically as "internal siezure").

(2) Will turn over but never fires.

(3) Fires occasionally but will not run.

If the motor will turn over, I'm with Dell, go straight to compression test. If it won't turn over, I'd bet along with Greg in Kentucky that the crank has siezed.

The engine turns over, it sounds like it is firing, but it will not run. There are blow backs as well.

Okay, at this point I'm with your neighbor, it's likely a ring.

Do the compression tests. Dell and others can help you interpret the readings better than I.

Thanks. I will let you know what the compression test tells me. It wil be a while (a few weeks) before I can get to it (being turkey season and all....). I guess I am going to learn a little more about engines. Of course, when I bought it in teh condition it was in (not running) I factored that in.

Well if its going to be a while before you get back to it before you leave to shot your bird fill all the cylinders with tranny fluid. That way if its stuck rings and or valve you stand a good chance that when you get back to it that things will be better and it may even run for you. Most it could do is not work and its worth the $2-5 gamble and sure will not hurt any thing. My self I don't turkey hunt any more its just to simple to shot a bird where I live so its no fun. I see about 10-50 birds a day from my house

You know, thinking about this one, the low coolant and oil in the coolant and all, I think maybe this tractor had a blown head gasket some time ago. I suspect you may find a little rust on the ferrous parts if/when you unbutton it.
