2N Bad water pump ? Troubleshoots?

After running perfectly for 5 years after my thorough overhaul/refurb my 47 2N began shooting steam from the general vacinity of the radiator. Couldnt find a leak. (It only steams when its running so its hard to pinpoint source), no drip found

After running at mid-idle for 15 minutes the bottom radiator hose is stone cold. Is this a sign of a bad water pump ? Seems like if the pump was working the bottom hose would have to be hot ?

I disconnected the lower hose at the radiator drained the coolant and cranked the engine with the switch off, but I could feel NO suction or pressure from the water pump.

BAD WATER PUMP ? SEEMS OBVIOUS !
Am I right ? Are ther other/better troubleshoots ?

Additional info: running for years without adding water, it looked a little low so I added some 50/50 (maybe too much)

Cap off no sign of circulation, just a little steam.

Thermostat installed as part of refurb.

Fins are clean

Belt is worn and a little floppy but the fan is turning strong.

I assume that I shouldn't run the tractor without a working pump, but I dont want to swap it if its not bad.

Help please,
Thanks

I would check the thermostat first, because it may not be opening. Remove the to hose & remove the thermostat and place in a pot of water and bribg it to a boil and be sure it is opening. If it is I would put the radiator hose back on without the thermostat and fill the radiator and start engine and look fer circulation in radiator, if none shows then it most likely has to be the water pump.

You have the thermostat in upside down or the thermostat is stuck closed.Leave the waterpump alone..

"I disconnected the lower hose at the radiator drained the coolant and cranked the engine with the switch off, but I could feel NO suction or pressure from the water pump."

The water pump is a "centrifugal pump"; and will NOT make any noticeable "suction" while trying to "pump air" like you were when you had the lower hose disconnected.

I put little more thought into your problem. Seems like there is an 8$ hose and 2 1$ clamps standing in your way.. To me.. 10$ ain't worth 'wondering' why my N don't run. In your situation.. I think this may be the time for a razor knife and a pair of side cuting pliers. Cut the old hose off..and snip the clamps.. have a new hose ready to install with new clamps.. and face them inthe correct direction. While it is apart.. test pump.. if it is thermostat.. then you can pop a new one in before finishing reinstalling hose.. if not.. you are already part way there to getting the pump off.

Either way.. you won't have to worry about the hood/hose/clamp issue any more.

with all due respect, there is nothing easy about removing the thermostat, that process starts with "remove the hood and gas tank"

If there is an easier way please tell me how

Robert,

With all due respect, if the thermostat is bad or in wrong and you change the water pump, you will still have the same problems. Thermostat is much cheaper than a water pump.

I would still recommend you either check the thermostat or remove it and see if you get flow.

Good luck,
Danny

?? I think you aren't uh.. trying hard enough. I have installed thermostats in both my N's top hoses with the hood in place.

You know that black rubber hose DOES bend... and bending it won't hurt it any...

Its not really a matter of trying, there is simply no access to the hose clamp from underneath, I cant even get a finger on it, much less a tool. Perhaps yours is different and has more clearance.

Yes I know the hose bends, that really doesnt matter if it cant be detatched.

Can anyone give me a troubleshoot for a water pump ?

It's a impellor style pump... it's not hard to test a pump.. I has a suction side and an output side

If you can't or are unwilling to take the top hose off then it will be more difficult to test.

Can you at least get to the top hose at the radiator... The top hose is the outlet.. with the thermostat in there it will be hard to test the pump because the outlet will be restricted untill the thermostat opens.

If you can get the top hose off the radiator perhaps you can work the thermostat out.. once that is done, you can start her up and see if you get flow from the top hose ( radiator cap off ).

I took care to install my hose clamp with the screw portion down and facing out for just this reason.

As the others have said, I would suspect the thermostat. Take it out and see if you get circulation. If so, bad thermostat. If not probably bad water pump.

Good luck,
Danny

The thermostat could still have gone bad. As far as the water pump most of the time when they go bad they either leak or they wobble a lot.

Put the thermostat in a pan of boiling water, if it's good it will open, if not try that first as much easier than water pump.
