What have I got if the ampmeter needle turns to the + side when I turn on the key, then jumps to about 10+ when engine starts, before going to slightly+ side of gauge after a few minutes? Just had generator rebuilt, added new vr last year with 3 terminals: batt., armature and field. have polarized the generator. Thanks.

Bruce: Thanks. I guess I'll leave things alone, although I think my battery may be shot, because if my system is charging properly then the battery should reflect the fact that it is being charged. However, it doesn't seem to be holding the charge, as it weakens quickly when starting the engine.

What you have is a properly functioning charging system. W/ the points closed, engine off & key on, you should see a slight minus reading on the meter. If the points are open, it should be zero, but my guess is your meter is a bit out of calibration. When you start the engine, the battery is drawing the higher current as it recharges from starting the engine; when it is charged, the v/r cuts out & your meter will show only a slight charge while the tractor is running.
