I am thinking of buying one the "old greys" a 1946 Ford. The transmission/PTO is low on fluid. What type/viscosity should I use to refill? I gather it"s common to have rear axle leaks? I have not gotten it running yet. Anything specific to look at before trying to fire it up?

Thanks

90 weight oil for the rear end and pto unless you are in the north then you need 80 weight, and in the extreme north a 50 weight.
rear end axel leak =is common but they sell an after market kit called sure seal.

What's your SN? Mine's a 46, too. I'm lucky; it came with the house and I haven't had to do anything to it other than change the rear oil and replace the PTO seal. Someone did a pretty nice job on it. Not a show queen but pretty nice looking and very reliable.

I think I need to get the SN off the machine. And check the other 'labels' if I can find any. This one hasn't been used in at least 5 years that I know of. My wife's boss got it with a 'ranch' he bought in Nevada and never used it.

Forgot to add, if you have established it's a '46, then it is a 2N....spend some time in "Research and Info" on the left.

I do this with all tractors that I have no idea how long its been since they have been started. I fill the cylinders with tranny fluid, that lubes the cylinders, cleans out rust and frees up the rings and valves. Then I would get an I-T FO-04 manual so you have an idea of whats is going on with it and how to work on it. I would also drain and replace ALL oils in it because theres likely to be water in them
