What does the serial # 8n C X88 identify?
I am a new owner.

Bruce,

Thank you for the info. I found the flat spot but could not read the numbers, if any were there.

If that serial number plate has been painted a few times, it may be hard to read any numbers. The numbers were hand stamped INTO the boss plate, meaning they are are not raised numbers like some of cast numbers you will find on the tractor. You can try using some paint remover (brush cleaner) on the area to soften the paint. Once the area is cleaned, you can try rubbing chalk over the plate and wiping it lightly. This leaves (hopefully) the chalk dust in the grooves, making them easier to see. Other people say you can shine a flashlight sort of sideways across the plate at night. It should start with 8N followed by six digits, in the case of a 1950 8N.
In this picture of my serial boss, the 8N is obliterated, but you can see the 419915 fairly clearly, as well as some "ghost" numbers (like that 2).
Good luck uncovering yours!
Carl

Carl, I have a feeling that the numbers you have are not the original numbers that were stamped on that block. I seem to also see a 1 and a 7 off to the right.

Here's my theory: Your tractor originally came with s/n 419915 but the engine blew. Owner bought a good engine block out of a salvage yard and stamped his original s/n on the new block over the number that used to be on the replacement block.

The 1 and 9 don't look like the same style you usually see on s/n.

Thanks for your insights. That's a theory I had never considered. That 419915 number fits with the other evidence on the tractor so I had never considered that I might have a replacement engine. I've had this tractor (Nellie is her name) for 25 years now, but I don't know anything much about its previous history. This engine has a large homemade (crude)weld patch on the front of the oil pan, probably from damage due to the loader it has on it.
N's do seem to have lots of little mysteries about them, some of which we can figure out and others that never seem to be solved. Just recently someone posted about an N hood that had two Ford scripts on the side, and no evidence on the inside that the 2nd one had been welded in, so who knows what the story is on that one! And there was a guy a few months back that had acquired a blue painted N, and had documentation (pictures) from the former owner that it arrived from the dealer that way. Strange things!
Carl

btw, you did real well at that auction to pick up that rear scoop for a good price.

I have a couple of N oil pans if you decide to replace the welded one. My price would be $75 plus shipping.

Freight from Utah to New Hampshire would probably be interesting....probably about $20 to $25.

Thanks for the offer. This weld, although crude & ugly has held for the 25+ years I've owned the tractor, so I'm not contemplating replacing it.
I know you are always parting out N's so I'll keep you in mind. My tractor came to me without a front grill because of the loader. I had a piece of 1/4" square hardware cloth instead. I replaced that last year with a nicer screen with the Ford logo from the Ford Farming screen that Rustbucket Dan used used. I might at some point be interested in a grill I could refurbish. I have a 1951 8N. The rub is the shipping costs from Utah to NH!

Thats a neat photo Carl! Never saw such a sloppy stamp job, not the norm. Either you have one extra tough engine block or the usual stamper was on his personal break! And then again it could have been new years eve.

That's not a serial number. The serial number is on the left side of the block, just below the cylinder head & behind the oil filter canister on a flat spot about 1 x 4.5 inches.
