I think I am in for a gasket change, but wanted a few verifications first: Within 30 seconds of a first of the day start, I have what appears to be steam in the radiator fill neck, and he is steaming during work a lot sooner than he used to. Also, I have a large cloud of what I think is vapor from the exhaust pipe for 2-3 minutes after starting, and then goes away. Don't smell the fuel or oil odors, and I do not see colors very well, so I rely on odors more. He also seems to run fine, until I put a load on him, then he struggles a bit. Will a compression test aid in this diagnosis? Thanks in advance for the ideas.

Yes, a compression test will tell ye more than anything else about the condition of the engine. Get ye dry and wet readings and report them back here for more help on diagnosis.
