Symptoms are: steam/vapor in radiator within 30 seconds of cold start, what appears to be steam/vapor coming from the exhaust pipe for about 2 minutes after cold start, then goes away. Does not carry an oil or gas odor in the vapor. ( don't see colors well, rely on smell). Ran a cold compression check with the following results:
(dry/wet) 1. 72/80 2. 80/85 3. 76/80 4. 55/62
I am thinking head gasket around # 4, but would like input before I tear into it. Thanks for the advice.

Be sure to get that head surfaced before putting it back together. Iff'n you don't, you'll be pulling it back down before long to put another head gasket on it and get the head surfaced. I was surprised at how bad my head was warped when I did the inframe OH on my '51 8n.

FO-4 Manual says the minimumm compression pressure is 90 psi. It does appear that ye most likely got a problem wif the #4 cylinder with a blown gasket, but all of ye readings are low. Sounds like ye got other problems, too. Do as Hobo advises you, he won't steer ye wrong.

I am think'n you are close about your think'n. I like to at least find the cylinder in question B-4 a tear down. remove the plugs and let it set for awhile, over night would B nice, look in each cylinder for coolant. Once found remove head and check gasket and head real good around the problem cylinder. Could also b a crack in the head so clean and inspect. If no coolant spin the engine over wif out the plugs and look for coolant to spit out a plug hole. it may help to put a finger over a plug hole and let the compression pop yer finger off then it will push coolant out. if a leak you should B able to find it and know were to look once the head izz off instead of going into it in the blind.

Will try the ideas you suggested. # 4 plug had a bit of residue on it, while the other3 looked clean. Thanks for the suggestion.

i like the way you are think'n you mite make a good detective. a leak will show its self keep, at it you will figger it out. I read somewere else were you were told steam out the pipe izz normal. WeLLLLL LLL may B a hand full or days out of the year when things are just rite you my see the condensation that has collected in the Zaust system burn its self off on a start up or may b he lives were it stays damp and cold all the time but that izz horse sheet and bad advice. I don't think i need to say enny more you see something that's not normal and figger you need to investigate it, good luck and keep us updated.

Now you know were to look for the problem. clean and take a good look at the head. Pix of a cracked head. I am gonna gamble and think you will see the problem wif the gasket and it wuz related to the low compression on that cylinder.
