I am looking at getting a used skid loader, mostly to help with all the manure that those four legged, maned critters keep generating. Due to my budget I am going to be looking at the low end of the skid loader world. What should I be looking for when looking at these things? Any particular "soft spots"? Your help is appreciated..

I"ve had a couple of these, still have 2. Mine have always been Bobcats. I would take my time looking to find a good one, they are out there as long as you don"t get too impatient. If you"re planning on being in wet soil, figure on getting tracks for any rubber wheeled loader. You can get one of these stuck quicker then sh_t without tracks in wet soils, like around a manure pile. Also, be sure to look at the wheel axil connections where they are welded to the chain-case housing. If they have been abused , the welded seams will be leaking and cracked. Which also means that they were probably run without enough hydraulic fluid in the casing which will mean extra ware on the pump. Find a mechanic in your area who works on them, usually someone who use to work for a distributor and ask him if he knows of any "good" ones. A good used one will probably run you at least $5,000-6,000. Like the others have said, these things can kill you quick. Learn slowly, don"t every walk, work, or repair anything under a raised bucket.

The lowest price skid steer that I would consider would be a L554,L555 New Holland or 675 or 675B John Deere. They are the same machine,New Holland made the skid steer John Deere put a different engine in,A Yanmar.

Both will be worn badly so make sure to by from an individual instead of auction.

Make sure all saftey features are in place, drive it and see if both sides pull together and hyd's work. Sorry, to many wear points on a skid, check boom bushing where bucket hinges and good luck.

So far at least in my area low end still means $3000 plus most of the time. We did find an old Bobcat brand 371 for $800 at an auction but then we had to rebuild the engine and do some other work to it before it could be used. So now that $800 machine is up around $1500-2000. Big thing is if you do buy one wear the seat belt or put one on if its not there and also LEAVE the safty cage on it or you could end up dead.

Right on about the safety cage. A local dentist here about 2 years ago was using his wif no cage and stuch his head out the side and brought the bucket down fer the last time. Safety cage had been removed.

Yep knew of one where the guy left to top on but took the side wire off and it was his last time also. Stuch his head out the side to see what he was doing and he hit the lower for the bucket frame and off his head went. Not a pretty sight
