o.k. fellas, here we go, I’m a newbie, knows very little. Found this site this week and have been studying it. LEARNED LOTS. Inherited three 8n’s. Working on 1 at a time right know. TRACTOR#1, It ran 3 years ago, overheated and died. Will turn over, getting fuel, no spark to plugs. 6V, + grnd, Front mount dist, did polarize genny, made mistake of jumping w/12v to battery. More than once. DIDN’T KNOW BETTER, THEN! Don’t know how to test Volt. Reg. (or coil) w/voltage tester. Don’t know which stud on starter to attach jumper cables to, to jump starter w/12V next time (avoiding cooking something). Trying to avoid guessing and remv/repl parts. Tractors and parts are in great shape. I think I probably fried volt.reg. or coil? I read the 50 tips on here, little too late though. Just young guy with very little experience w/tractors, my dad knew lots, but now he’s gone and they were left to me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Proxy---as you get to working on these 3 tractors, you will get a lot of good advice from the folks that visit here.

By telling us you have read the 50 tips, I would guess you have found the Archives as well? Great source to review before you get to actually asking your questions on the forum.

If you dont have one already, I would recommend buying an I&T FO4 Shop Manual. You can get them on this site as well as from other vendors.

You will often think a starting/running problem is carburetor related----WRONG----80% of the time these issues are electrical/ignition related.

I was reading the FO4 Manual today and on P.55, bottom right it states..... "Most problems involving failure to start, poor or rough running, all stem from trouble in the ignition system. Many novice troubleshooters assume that these symptoms point to the fuel system instead of the ignition system."

I have found that the "IT AIN'T CHUR CARB" advice that I have seen many times on this forum, is pretty much right on the money----

Have fun working on the 3 N's---TIm

Replaced plugs on 2 8n tractors 2 days ago, was told to use AC 45L to replace chmpn H12& mtrcrft AL-82. Probably bad advice? Also replaced shut-off/sediment bowls and cleaned out both gas tanks. Fuel Runs clean. Tried jumping with big bolt attached to "L" bracket going from starter case to solenoid w/ no response, maybe also not clean enough. Will clean and retry. Costly endeavor to replace coil & volt. reg. on 2 8n"s though. I recall OCCAM"S RAZOR, was using in conjunction with discussion board to get this far. Hoping with alittle luck and a few of you guys, I might get pretty good with these 8n"s.

Proxy..... ...yer always safe jumping direct to the starter motor BIG-STUD. understand? Surprizingly enuff, starter motor don't care, positive or negative jump battery.

Jumping 12v direct to the 6-volt battery posts is ACID EXPLOSIVE DANGEROUS to yer FACE.

Did you damage anything jumping 12v to the 6v battery posts? YES!!! You probably blew yer 6-volt squarecan voltage regulator guttz and yer barely adequate 6-volt squarecan sparkie coil. REPLACE THEM!!!

And while well equipped automotive electrical shops can still test old fashioned mechanical electrical stuff, it ain't worth yer $$$. 'cuz experience has proved otherwize. Remember Hakeem's Razer.

2-tips: replace yer FLOODED sparkies with new dry AutoLite AL-437 sparkies (gap = 0.025) ...and... enny engine that has set long without starting has LOST COMPRESSION SEAL of the oilrings. Squirt about 1-oz of Marvel Mystery Oil ..or.. automatic tranny oil ..or.. regular engine oil down yer sparkie hole while changing yer sparkies. Crank yer engine over a couple of times to spread the oil BEFORE puttin' yer NEW SPARKIES in..... ..Dell, the de-frustrater

Dell,

Hakeem doesn't shave; he's one of them. The 14th-century English logician and Franciscan friar William of Ockham, however, probably did shave.

Not that shaving one's face has anything to do with the theory of selecting the simplest solution to a problem.

Unfortunately, it is NOT intuitively obvious how his name got changed to "Occam."

(Russ: not really replying to you. But I want this at the bottom of the thread and don"t know any other way to make sure it goes there.)

Since you have three tractors, you"re going to have your hands full.

May I suggest a triage situation? You know tractor number 1 overheated and was run until it died.

This is BAD BUSINESS. Especially if the tractor heated to the point where the grease and oil depostits on the side started to bubble.

So, I would do a compression check on this tractor. Even money it needs a head gasket.

Then, I would do compression checks on the other tractors, check the ammeters for correct ignition system operation, and remove the sediment bowls and examine the contents for rust. I"d also pull drain plugs and check for correct fuel flow.

That way you can start on the best tractor first. This will greatly decrease the frustration factor.

Just an idea, not written in stone.
