Hoping y"all can give me a quick answer, I don"t know much about motors, am conserned if I should worry about purchasing a Ford tractor that has had the head replaced? I am wondering WHY it was replaced? Should I go ahead and buy it? Or do y"all think there might be problems after purchasing it?
Thanks ahead of time. All of you Ford Men have always been a great help to me, even though I hardly get on here, just to read what y"all say. Thanks again!

Some VERY good answers ther.

And especially Dell, it is what I was hoping someone would put the words there to say.

Now that that has been said.

These are simple machines that work, and work good, and work hard.

ESPECIALLY with the help avalible on this board, you can even be able to answer this question for yourself.

Lets go back to the basics for a few....

Does it crank? Does it run? Does it respond to throttle? Does it have water in the oil, what does the oil look like? how does it work? does it feel right or do you feel thengs that are rough?

Get her warm, do a dry, then wet compression test, check the head fasterners tourque.

Many, many little things to answer your questions.

Mini..... ..WARPED FLATHEAD was the reason for replacing the cylinder head. Its not un-common, mainly due to OVERHEATING from blown head gasket. Why? 'cuz the 4-cyl flattie only has 18 headbolts while its bigger V-8 flattie brother has 24 headbolts. (and still warp) The NAA OHV 4-cyl has 12 headbolts My aluminum 4-cyl BMW 2002 OHC head only has 10 headbolts. Why the difference? The VALVES dictate the head bolting requirements. And while you can have yer flathead "milled" or "skimmed" to remove the warp, you can only do it once before the valves start hammering the flathead.

Replacing a warped cylinder head is no biggie. Just remember to keep re-torquing your flathead headbolts a couple of times while warm. Headbolts = 70ft/lbs; studnuts = 55ft/lbs. You do know the difference between headbolts and studnuts don't you?..... ....respectfully, Dell

Hey Dell, should have told everyone this is a 1953 Golden Jubilee. I asked the man and he said the old one had a small crack in it.Said he spent $1100 to get the new one put one. Said NAA's have a habit of cracking for no reason, Is this true? Thanks all!

Mini..... .I keep tellin' you guys, I flunked mind reading; just ask my ex-wife.

Welp, bare OHV cylinder heads are about $800 (not cheap) and then maybe haffta replace some of the valves and rockers and springs. (or maybe not). So $500 in extra parts and labor probably ain't outta line.

But to answer yer basic question, I haven't heard of the 134cu/in NAA Jubilee Red Tiger cylinder head as having habit of cracking for no reason. I'm NO EXPERT on OHV Jubie engines..... ...respectfully, Dell

Don't sweat the small stuff (replaced head) and don't pet the sweaatty syuff. Better that they did instead of you having to. Ye may need to retorque the head bolts if it was a recent replacement. And why did they have to replace the head?

Got a chuckle out of your reply Ross, but, that's what I'm wondering, WHY was the head replaced when the tractor runs good, at least now. My luck, I'll buy it and she'll go to heck! I guess , I should ask, is there any reason to worry about a new head on a tractor that looks and runs good? Can something else develope from the replacement? And again WHY would it need replaced to begin with besides cracking? Thanks again!

It seems simple to me: ask the seller why he had to replace the head! Then you'll know!

If you are going back to see the tractor again, there's a good article that this site has on buying your first tractor. Here's the link to it below. It has some good advice on what to check and what to look for and warning signs of things to avoid.
