Hello everybody. I've been looking for a 2 bottom plow, a friend happened across one. It's a Ferguson plow, model 12-AO-40. I haven't seen it, but based on the numbers, I assume it's a 12" share. I've heard that these can be very pricey to replace?

Also, it's missing one of the rolling coulter assemblies. Any idea where I can get one of them and what it would cost? Other than that, it appears to be in decent shape. Any thoughts on what it's worth? Asking price is $250, but if I've got to put some money in it, I'd like to have some bargaining ability or just wait for a better deal.

Thanks for the input.

WESTWIND-- I might be interested in the coulter you have for the Ferguson plow-- maybe a mouldboard also if available -- one of minr has a piece broken off-- still plows good but looks sorta tacky with broken and a missing part. How much$ and how far away from West Virginia are you ?

If you're interested in a coulter assembly, I might have one I'll part with. Email is open.

I found a Ferguson 14-A two bottom plow at a local implement dealer and it too had a $250 price tag on it. It was missing the jointers (coulter scrapers) and the tail wheel. I thought "no way will I pay premium for a plow missing parts", so I offered $200 cash. He said NOPE! So I left disgusted. This dealer is on the way to my property, so I would stop by every other week or so and offer him $200 cash - NOPE! This went on for over 6 months, I would walk in with cash and say "Are you ready to get rid of that rusting hunk of metal you generously call a plow" :-) And he would say NOPE. Finally, my wife got sick of the side trip every stinkin' time we drove by and just bought it for my 40th birthday as a present. Yep - she paid $250!

I put another $150 or so and it is now fully restored and sitting on Delilah. Get familiar with Scott at Sweigard Brothers...

Moral of the story is - if you want it - just buy it now and save the time and trouble.

Dan

Hi Dan,

I saw that you restored a Ferguson plow. I too have just aquired a 16" single-bottom Ferguson. The coulter is rusted solid and flops all over the place (meaning the stem swivels freely, is it supposed to?). The jointer is missing too. In general, there is much corrosion but it still can be saved. I would like to get this plow back into working condition. Where did you get all of the missing parts to restore your plow?

Thanks,

Dave

In my opinion, coulters are really only needed when busting sod. If you are just needing a plow to turn previously plowed ground, the coulter can wait until after spring plowing is done.

Of course, that is only my opinion. Others may disagree.

Ed:

The $250 price is about the going rate at this time of year for one that is serviceable and not missing much. With a complete coulter missing, I would offer no more than $200 assuming that all else is serviceable.

That said, I would not expect the seller to sell it. He can probably get the $250 from somebody.

I sold a good serviceable 2X12" Dearborn plow about 10 days ago for $250. It was complete except for joiners and joiner brackets but one coulter bushing was worn and the coulter pivot brackets were badly worn and needed work.

The last time I bought any, 14" shares were around $120 each and 14" moldboards were about $115 each. I would not expect 12" parts to be much different.
