Hello,
I have an old rusty fuel tank that has not been used in a while.
How do I clean it? Is there any kind of cleaner needed?
Thank you,
RDAllison

I took mine to a radiator shop and had it boiled out. Make sure you address the rest of the fuel system while your at it. Check the three screens. One is on top of the shut off assembly and sticks up in the gas tank. One is a flat screen that sits on top of the sediment bowl. And one is in the elbow connector that connects the fuel line and the carb. Have a good look inside the shut off assembly as it can get pretty gunked up. Since I was doing everything else, including installing a new carb, I also replaced the fuel line, which was quite rusty.

Tiered of Shaking your gas tank yet, if you have another running tractor, take the running tractor and jack up one of the rear wheels, strap your gas tank to the wheel, put the rocks in, stick it in high gear, idle it down to save gas, and let roll. caution don't do this to long unless you want to get rid of your tank as well. 1 to 2 hours seems to work fine.

Installed/In-situ? Or removed? Removed is better. Drain it, remove it, throw some loose nuts/bolts/chain inside it, and vibrate it in every position then pour it all out. Throw some OSPHO inside it, swish it around thoroughly, pour out the Ospho (phosphoric acid conversion) and let it dry. Do NOT rinse with water, but reinstall it and keep it full of fuel from now on while it's sitting in the shed.

Thanks.
One quick question where would you get the OSPHO?

By the way....when I said don't rinse out the tank....I misspoke. What I meant was,...after you vibrate it clean,..and THEN RINSE out the tank with solvent/gasoline/etc.....and then let it dry..... and then cover the insides with OSPHO and let it dry again..... THATS when you don't want to put any water in it again or it'll ruin the OSPHO treatment.
