Ford 8N Stumbling, shutting down

My 8N will start perfectly, run for a few minutes at idle, then surge, sputter and shut down. If I wait a good minute or two, it will restart and run for another minute or so and do the same thing.

I've heard that it may be the fuel line getting too hot and vaporizing the fuel...I really need help as the grass is getting taller!

Thanks.

Studley..... ..there are 4-common runtime issues with the 4-nipple squarecoil frontmount distributor 8N.

1) runs for about 1-min, stutters and quits, restarts in about 5-mins. does that sound like your problem??? BAD CONDENSER
2) runs for about 5-mins, stutters and quits; restarts in about 10-mins. Clogged fuel filters (3)
NOT yer stated problem, but could be.
3) runs for about 15-mins, stutters and quits, restarts in about 15-mins, bad ignition switch
NOT yer stated problem, but could be.
4) runs for about 1-hr, stutters and quits, restarts in about 4-hrs or overnite, bad ignition coil.
NOT yer stated problem.

While the metal fuel line is exposed to radiant exhaust manifold heat, it takes MUCH LONGER TIME to "vapor-lock" a gravity fed fuel line than your stated runtime problems. Iff'n you think thats your problem, wrapp some aluminum foil around the line. It don't take much to "insulate" radiant heat.

Me? I think yer problem is CARB ICING. This is a common springtime issue of external air moisture and temperature. I'd wrap some aluminum foil around carb PIPE and EXHAUST manifold to pre-heat the incoming moisture laden air so the heat-robbing effect of the carb venturi doesn't ice yer carb internals and clogg yer carb jets with invisible ICE.

Carb ICING is common problem with lite-aircraft engines and they actually have a lever called "CARB-HEAT" that the pilot pulls on approach when the engine is on idle (max venturi vacuum) and succeptable to ICING just when they need power to do a "GO-AROUND"..... ...Dell

Look, Ma! Condensation in reply to Dell (WA), 04-20-2007 09:48:18
Sometimes you can spot carb icing by noticing condensation on the carb. You can also touch the carb body and if it is noticeably cooler than the air temp you might have condensation issues inside the carb that you can't see.

It's probably not a vapor lock, but it could easily be a vacumn lock. Remove the gas cap & see. Or, perhaps it's got clogged fuel screens. One in the brass elbow to the carb, one in the top of the sediment bowl & one on the stem of the sediment bowl in the gas tank. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the carb, turn the gas on & check the fuel flow. Should be steady as long as the gas is on. Check all that & if that doesn't work, take a look at the points. A bad condenser will give you a 1 minute run time & show up as pitting & burning on the points..... but I don't think that's your problem. If you still have a problem, email me; I'm in Old Church, about 5 miles from greater downtown Studley & I make house calls if beer is involved!
