I'm at a loss with my loss of power problem. 52 8N side mount was mowing and ran out of gas. Then when I put new gas in had low to no power under load. Have checked fuel flow at carb flows freely, checked spark plugs look ok for 2 yr old plugs, checked points OK, checked governor nothing when I pull the link so took it off found flat spots on balls and race replaced internals. Started her up today goes forward OK and when pto on forks go up ok but when I got in reverse it died. Any ideas??

Well the key is you ran out of gas and most likely sucked some dirt into the main jet of the carb. I would #1 pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and check for gas flow. If its good there then turn the gas back off and pull the main jet adjustment screw out and with the drain plug still out spray carb cleaner in to the main jet area. Some times doing that is enough to blow the dirt out and be good to go again

Thanks Old, I did that today and the gas flowed out of the carb bowl better but it didn"t make much difference in reverse.

Hello... It sounds like you are having the same trouble that I am with my 49. I tried to scrape the driveway yesterday and going up a hill it died. Absolutely no power whatsoever. I have replaced plugs, dist cap, rotor, points and so forth. I hope we will find the culprit soon. Good luck....
