Hope someone can help. Last fall I had the piston rings replaced (was burning oil like crazy, also ended up with a lot of oil in the antifreeze, gasket was completely wore out.) and the carb rebuilt. The tractor ran well for the rest of the fall. We had a really harsh winter up here this past year and now I can't get the thing to start. I've cleaned all contacts and have replaced the battery. It's a 6V system and all the thing wants to do is crank, crank and crank some more. I've check for spark and have lots of it. Does anyone have any ideas on what to look at next.

The engine will not start, i guess would be a better description. Sorry if I confused anyone. The engine is not seized and I can here the starter running. The problem I have now is that when I push the button to try and start it, it turns really slowly. I"ve talked to a couple older farmers up here who had this problem in the past, they are saying that it"s possible, when the piston rings were replaced last fall, the pins weren"t all put in place properly to hold the nuts tight. They said that maybe one of the lift arms has come loose, and it"s actually off centre and making the piston lift crooked which is causing it to be tight.

Does this make sense to anyone?

When you state won't turn over do you mean it will not start because the starter is spinning which the engine will not turn over or that the engine is somehow seized or frozen up? If it is I can't get it started, but the starter spins fine and you can hear it turning, I had a similar problem last weekend. Maybe this will help. Opened the fuel bowl after sitting all winter in the snow belt of NY and took too long getting to the ignition key 3-5 mins went by and gas started pooring out of the carb. and I could not get it to fire up to start now that it was flooded. Tapped on it to hopefully get the float to move-no luck-still leaking.
I stopped the flow of gas by closing fuel bowl shutoff and while I cleaned AL437 plugs, it took just long enough for the flooded carb to return to normal and it started right up with the choke on a little bit and had to leave on for about a min.(cold eng) I did leave the fuel shutoff off until it started(enough in the line for 15 secs. )or so of running. carb does not leak at all now.Thought I was going to have to rebuild or replace.

The plug closest to driver was fowled with gray fuzzy matter-not sure what it was. Seems to start fine now except the starter tends to spin alot when I press the starter button (like 5 times) before it will crank engine. Must be time for a starter for me. Hope this helps.

Ray..... ...while the guys have given you some excellent advice, the most important thing to do when yer engine won't start and especially when you have sparkies and engine won't start ...is... (are you ready for this?) CHANGE yer FLOODED sparkies. NEW AutoLite AL-437's gapped 0.025.

Why? 'cuz yer crankin' has FLOODED yer sparkies with INVISIBLE NO-LEAD deposits. And them lazy sparkies just leak down the side of the white porcelin center insulator instead of jumpin' the gap.

Don't throw them flooded sparkies away; just clean and dry them, one-atta-time, in yer hot and runnin' engine and save them for the NEXT TIME YOU FLOOD. (and there will be a next time, don't ask how I know)

Don't overlook WATER CONDENSATION in the gastank, look in yer glass fuel filter bowl for swirlys. I once drained 3-qts of cloudy gasoline from my tractor that was stored in a LOCKED SHED. Funny how watered gasoline smells like gasoline, feels like gasoline but won't sparkle. Its always a good thing to add "Dry-Gas" to sopp-upp water condensation..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

It takes three things for an engine to run: spark at the right time, compression, & fuel in the right mixture. Lets start w/ spark.....how do you know you have spark? Remove a plug, or use an old one, ground it to the head, connect a plug wire, turn the key on & crank it. If you have a fat, bright blue spark, you are good to go. Next, lets consider fuel. Been setting all winter? Water in the gas? Maybe you forgot to put Stabil in the tank & the carb is gummed up. But, first things first....remove the bolt at the bottom of the carb, turn the fuel on & check for flow. As long as the gas is turned on at the sediment bowl, you should have a good flow of fuel. Next thing, get a can of starting fluid, remove the breather hose, turn the key on & crank the engine. After it turns over a few times, spray some fluid in the carb. Leave the choke alone! If it fires but won't start.... chances are it's carb cleaning time. Lastly, compression.....while that's not the likely problem....crank the engine & put your hand over the carb. If you feel good suction, that is a close enough compression check for the time being. Post back & you will get plenty of help!

As Usual... in reply to Bruce (VA), 04-22-2007 08:32:20
...Bruce has said that which should be said.

Was the tractor kept outside all winter? If so, I'd rather expect to see condensation in the tank than otherwise. Look for water when you check the fuel flow by pulling the drain plug.

By the Way... in reply to A. Bohemain, 04-22-2007 08:48:51
...I don't like Correctness Police any more than anyone else, but with the internt, we need SOME common terminology, as we can only communicate by written word.

On these boards, and almost every where else, when we say a tractor "won't turn over" we mean the engine is frozen and won't move. A more clinical term is the ominous "internal siezure."

When the motor "cranks and cranks but won't start," the usual terminology is "won't fire" rather than "won't turn over."

Good luck!
