This weekend, I was able to give my tractor a proper workout. The last 2 years, I have used it for mowing, hauling wood, and light duties around my property. I thought you guys might enjoy the pics.

Following tips from Hobo and Zane, I hooked up the Dearborn 2-14, attached the coulters for breaking the sod and off I went plowing a field for the first time.

A view from my 51 8N work tractor. Plowed in 2nd gear at almost full throttle. Plow was turning furrows down about 8 inches and "Ernie" was getting a good workout.

It wasn't just too crooked? It took a few passes for this plowing newbie, but seemed to work out fairly decent.

Finished the day with some light duty tree planting work.

It is raining on that freshly turned field today. Next weekend will be discing and planting time. I can't believe how well these old tractors still can work.----Tim

Great pics Tim! That field looks like an old pro plowed it.

The only thing better than seeing an N plowing is being able to hear that little engine under load!

Thanks Jeff---I agree---that little 8N even surprised some of my Amish neighbors.

I know some of them think that tractor is little more than a toy--but, I do have fun playing with it.

Maybe I can get some tractor/horse plow competition pictures next week---LOL

Tim, Do you have solution in your tires, or wheel weights? I just can not imagine these little guys plowing as such! I think the plowing looks excelent. Is this an old hay field? Just nosey, sorry!

Yes, I have loaded tires, no wheel weights. This area was pastured for as long as I can remember up until 2 years ago.

The last 2 years, I let it grow up in grass and have kept it mowed short until this Spring.

I dont know what kind of grass/hay it is, but here is a picture of the area right after I mowed it last June. You can see some unmowed grass in the back of the pic----maybe you can tell me what kind of grass it is---Tim

Nice looking N, just bought 2 '51's and after I get one in condition will be taking it up to Cahone, Colorado to start my tree farm. So as you can see I'm not only interested in your tractor but in your trees. What can you pass on in regards to your planting and spacing techniques?

Bruce--The first thing I would recommend is to contact the local Forestry Department where you plan to put the tree farm in. They should be helpful in providing you with information on any grant (no strings attached $$) programs that are available for reforestation projects.

The State of WI works with the landowner to design a tree planting plan specifically for the landowners objectives, with step by step how-to's from site preparation in late Fall, to Spring Planting, Grass Control, etc.

My sites (3 of them) have a 3-row wind break of conifers and then alternating rows of hardwoods and conifers. I used 8 different tree species.

I put in 700 trees per acre. If perfect, that would keep trees about 7' apart and rows about 8' apart. I hired a 2-man tree planting crew and together we planted 14,000 seedlings in a little less than 3 days.

The trees you see in the picture were put in the ground in April of 2005. This will be the third growing season.

Grass control is important, mice and vole damage is next to impossible to prevent, and deer love to eat the red oaks seedlings. Last year I replaced about 2000 trees due to drought and deer/mice damage. This year will put in another 2000 trees.

I have been trying to mow between rows 3 times each year to try to control weed and grass growth. I also put a herbicide control on in late November of 2005.

It took 2 years from first contact with the Forestry Department until we planted the first tree----if you need any more info, let me know and I will email you. HTH----Tim

Nice pics Tim. I wanted to do that this weekend also, but other chores called ahead. Makes ya feel pretty good when you look back over yer shoulder down a straight furrow. Disc it tomorrow or Wednesday. I've had my best luck a day or two after turning sod. Still cuts up nice and isn't as bumpy.

Westwind---it is supposed to rain the next few days and hopefully I can get to discing on Friday when I get back to the farm.

If I am lucky, one of the neighbors will disc it for me in exchange for a little plowing!!!

It sure is "fun" working the old tractors---Tim

Thanks Dwayne---you are right--it was fun--I might feel different about it if I had to plow a few hundred acres though!!!

I hope can get to the discing part before too long of a wait. Rain forecast here the next few days.---Tim

You should disk that freshly turned sod one day later when it has dried a bit, but not too much. If you wait too long it will be very cloddy. A few good rains are also the worlds best tillage tools. Good luck. Mike

Thanks Mike---my neighbor (a real farmer) told me the same thing. He said rain would do that turned field a good one!!

The field should have dried out good on Sunday with 82 degree weather and windy though. There was snow in spots on the ground last Wednesday, so a lot of moisture in places---Tim

Thanks Sean---the weather was just about "perfect" although for me 80 degrees is too warm, especially this time of year.

But, any time I can get on the tractor, I consider it a perfect day!!---Tim

Very cool. Looks like you got the hang of it quickly. Those are some nice pics of some good looking property and a good looking N doing what they were designed for.

Enjoy,
Dan

Thanks Dan---I surprised myself a bit with the results. I believe it was because the plow was set up right---followed Hobo's and Zane's set up.

The property is taking shape slowly but surely. I need to build a shed to put the tractor and implements in. Should get to that this summer.

There never are enough hours on the weekends-eh?

Tim
