I have two 8ns. One is a 49 front mount 12 volt converison and the other is a 51 side mount 6 volt.My 49 front mount 12 volt has two thin nuts and the snap ring like the IT manual exploded diagram for the rear wheel. I was comparing one to the other. However, my 51 side mount 6 volt only has a one and a half inch nut on one rear wheel and on the other it has the same but also what appears to be a small sliding plate behind it. It will freely turn. I didnt have a problem with the side with the thick nut. Removed the wheel found a spring unhooked on the drum plate. Hooked back up the spring, cleaned up the brake drum, mounted the wheel back on Applied 400 lbs torque. No more play in the wheel. I was feeling good after that but you all know how it is with these things you accomplish one thing and then hit a brick wall on another. Here is the problem. On the other wheel with the thick single nut and undernetah sliding plate, the nut is stripped or the threads on the shaft are stripped so that the nut will turn either way butit will not tighten or come off. I believe I am goign to have to saw it off and then rethreasd the axle and replace the large nut. Is this single large nut set-up a different way 8n wheels were mounted instead of the mutliple nuts washers and snap rings? Did other model 8ns come with a single large nut or is this a make shift replacement? Is sawing it off the best way to get it off? Any thoughts or suggestions?
