Well it happened. I listened to you guys awhile and then decided to work on my '51 8N. I also bought 3 books. But I got lost! I took the engine and clutch off the tractor. Now I'm looking in the bell housing at a small 2 speed splitter transmission. There is a drain plug on the bottom of it - but - no fill plug, no level check plug or dip stick that I can see in there. The books don't show it or what to put in it. I just thought I at least aught to check the oil level while the engine is out and I can get to it.? Thanks for any help - and you may be getting more questions as I "wonder" (wonder what this is??) through this tractor.

As far as I know, all the auxiliary transmissions that mount in the bell housing use the transmission/hydraulics oil. It gets pumped in and through the auxiliary transmission via the input shaft bearing. I've watched it on mine just to see it by firing it up with the transmission cover off (messy, but fun).

I would recommend draining the auxiliary transmission as long as you're there. Undoubtably the oil laying in the bottom isn't pretty, and will help contaminate the new oil when you put it in the tractor.

Two rather straight forward ways of filling the auxiliary transmission.

1, Work it through the bearing from the main transmission.

2, squirt it up through the plug hole, and then quickly put the plug in.

Not that hard if you've got a pump of some sort. I bought one cheap, and t threads right onto an old antifreeze jug. I keep it filled with oil and lubricate all my vehicles that way. Much easier and less messy then those blasted quart sqeeze bottles.

Just fill it up until it's pouring back into the main gearbox.

Try the FAQ page at the link below under Sherman transmissions. It should help you determine what you have and answer questions about it.
