My 2n will only start if I shot some Starting Fluid in the air intake. What can I do to fix this? It used need it only when it was cold but now it doesn't matter what the temp is. Once it starts it runs like a top. Thanks for your help.

Don..... ..once you haffta start using ether-quickstart, that a SURE-SIGN of needing a TUNE-UP and new AutoLite AL-437 sparkies (gap = 0.025) but it AIN'CHUR CARB, its weak sparkies.

Besides wornout ignition points, the most likely cause of weak sparkies is..... yer weaksister IGNITION SWITCH, replace it too. ($12, cheap) ..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Pixley..... ..can you git an ignition switch at NAPA? Well yes'n'no.

Yes, most NAPA ignition switches are stronger than the OEM 2-wire weaksister ignition switch with built-in wires ...but... you haffta make yer own wires to use enny NAPA keyed ignition switch and know which 2-posts to use outta 3-or-4-or-more. For most shadetree mechanics, this is a trivial exercise in good electricity practices.

Me? I replaced my OEM ignition switch 3-times in one summer of brushhoggin' before I gotts gripe'd and bought a marine grade waterproof 25-amp toggle switch and wired it myself. Keys? who needs'em eh?..... ...Dell the capable electrician

Could you have overlooked a possible choke-linkage problem?
Not familiar with the 2N, but does the choke butterfly valve inside the carburetor inlet tube actually close when you apply the choke? Most engines have to be choked, at least briefly, to enrich the fuel mixture when starting cold.

Some carburetors have a spring-loaded vacuum-relief 'trap-door' as a part of the choke butterfly valve assembly which, if stuck open or missing the spring pressure, might defeat the choke's operation and cause hard starting of a cold engine.

i had that problem and it was weak fire, caused by old corroded battery cables. RP

Common Test in reply to Donald Pixley, 04-23-2007 07:27:15
Many on these boards keep a spare spark plug pre-gapped at 3/16" or so. Then, all you need to do is pull a spark wire and pop it on the spare plug, hold the plug up against the block, and turn "er over.

I"ve done the same test lo these thirty years or more by holding the spark wire approx. 1/4 inch from block, but this method is impracticable if the wires have boots; and the 3/16" plug method gives much more consistent readings and is easily repeatable, so I"ve adopted it myself.

If you fail the spark test, and are having trouble finding the bad part, don"t forget the ignition switch. They are apparently very problematic and many on this board were ready to start rending their garments until Dell convinced them to TRY substituting a new switch, at which point the spark became noticeably better.

Sounds like you need to check spark.. if spark is ok, then check fuel system and then compression.

post back.
