why do you need to put the sleeves back in a engine? why cant you use bigger pistons and leave the sleeves out? the 40 thou sleeve engine can be bored to fit 90 thous sleeves so the cylinders walls have to be strong enough. this is a low compression engine. so why cant you do this? is there anyone out there that has done this? thanks marv

I"ve got an older 8N with a worn out engine torn down right now that has been rebuilt that way. No sleeves in a block that originally had the thinwall .040 sleeves. The taper and ridge in the cylinders is such that a rering isn"t going to do it any good. I checked with the machine shop about having it overbored to install the iron .090 sleeves and while they said it is no probem, the cost is prohibitive. Given the fact that it also needs all new exhaust valve seats, the cost of machine shop labor to straighten it back out is more than the cost of a good used block. Put the sleeves in. You might save a couple bucks on sleeves right now, but you"ll cost yourself a couple hundred at the next overhaul.

Last one I did (4+ years ago) was $22.50 per hole and that included R&R on the sleeves. What kind of price are you getting?

I was quoted $35 a hole. X4 totals $140. I only have one local machine shop and they price their work accordingly. I didn't get a quote for the seat replacement, but I'm sure that it would push the cost of machine work for the block itself well above the $100-$150 that I can find a good replacement block for in my area. I don't intend to scrap the block by any means, but at this point, I can get a replacement and resleeve it and do the valves myself for less.

I just checked my rebuild file and the charge for reboring was a bit less than I recalled ($80 total) and $10 to install one new seat. At the time we had 3 shops within 1/2 mile of one another. Unfortunately the gentleman I was dealing with had a heart attack and closed his shop down. The other two are bigger, better equipped, less friendly, and more expensive.

It can be done and some do so but, if you do that the next time it needs to be rebuilt you will need to get another block because your old one will not be able to be rebuilt again. Thats why they put sleeves in engines so they could be rebuilt over and over and over again and not need to replace the block. Cars and small trucks don't use sleeves because the companys want them to wear out so you buy new ones. But big trucks and tractors have sleeves so the blocks will last and last. Its your call

these engines would not have lasted 65 years without sleeves. also farmall found that engines with sleeves were good for about 15000 hrs. between rebuilds, and without sleeves 500 hrs. think i will stay with sleeves. RP

You can and many do, I think they use flathead Mercury pistons, but you may not be able to bore and rebuild again, there is no noticable power increace.
