Last night I was trying to pull off the crank pulley. Didn't have a big enough wrench so I got a pipe wrench. I tried to stuff some rope down #1 sparkplug hole to keep piston from coming all the way up to TDC so I could get some leverage on the pulley bolt. Thought I had it and gave the wrench a good pull. By the way, I have pulled one side of the front axle away from engine and blocked up underneath the pan. I had tractor in reverse and when I pulled on the wrench, turned the engine over and almost backed up off the blocks. Do the words "Duh" mean anything to me? Well,anyway, I've got a question, and as always, any help will be most appreciated. I never could get the rope pushed down into the cylinder good enough to bind up the crank enough to get leverage on the crank pulley bolt. I am so inexperienced with this, but I thought that the plug hole would be right on top of the cylinder and it seems that it is off center. This is normal, right? Any other suggestions for getting the crank pulley loose? Thanks, Chuck

I put my 8n in 4th gear, locked both brake levers down securely, put blocks around the tires and had no problems taking off or putting back on.

Funny you should mention this. I had this problem this week. Here was my solution.

You obviously have to be careful not to grind up the pto, but if you used the proper sized ratchet and a longer breakover, it would work better than a pipe wrench.

Reverse the direction for tightening.

Great "trick"! Only one thing to add. I have an adapter and will use that to keep pipe wrench off splines. If you don't have an adapter you could use the PTO shaft - that would let you put a bar thru the gap in the U joint to prevent rotation.

For those with the requisite ORC for safety, you will need to take it off - for one of the assembly/disassembly operations. Since one way it will just spin.

My ORC is my "adapter", and of course it was removed. From the picture you probably can't tell this is a 1 1/8 PTO.

I tried to run a bar through the pin hole of the pto/ORC, but I just bent the bar (it's a pretty small hole).

In your case you would have needed a solid adapter. And you couldn't use a PTO shaft because it is for 1-3/8" splines. (Unless you happen to have an OLD sickle bar mower around with the 1-1/8" spline coupling) :-)

I don't think even a hardened pin thru the hole would be strong enough. So it is no surprise that a plain steel pin didn't work

Some day when I've got time, I've got to swap out a pulley so I can use the loader I got.

I too worry about sticking a rope in the combustion chamber. What I did was pull off the starter and then bind up the ring gear with a crow bar against the housing. There is lots of leverage there on that flywheel. My $.02

Well, The best bet is to take the front end off and use an impact wrench. Very safe for you and your machine to do it this way. If you have a late model with the rind gear opening you might be able to lock it down there. Rope in a cylinder makes me feel like I could crack the manifold, or mess up a wrist pin, leverage is a powerful thing you know.

I have no idea about an N, but I just did the harmonic balancer on my Wifes Jeep and had the same trouble.
A mechanic friend of mine told me to put a socket and a cheater on it and crank it right to the ground. Then he told me to just bump the starter and let the engine loosen the bolt.
Worked like a charm.
Like I said, I have no idea if this will work on an N, and am not recommending it.
Just that it worked for me...
