Date codes! There may be one under the tractor next to the drain plug on the hydraulic pump:

You may also find date codes on the rear axle. It could be a code similar to this:

This one is on a 1951 8N. The code breaks down like this:
D=April
25 = 25th
1 = 1951

The axle date code could also be more straightforward, like this:

Check out the link below. Look for any non-engine related features that will help you identify the year. Start with the type of steering gear to narrow the year down quite a bit.

Rick..... ..its kinda hard 'cuz the normal way with the 4-cylinder tractor is by engine serial number can't be done with the dealer installed industrial 6-cylinder flathead that uses 6-cyl flathead pickup engine parts.

But iff'n you just gotta know, sometime you can interpret the casting numbers on the rearaxle trumpets and look underneath the hydro-tranny pump for a date. Sometimes the tranny has an interpreting alpha-numeric casting date code.

Copy them all down and post'em exactly were you found them and somebody can make sense outta them.

Bottom line, 50yo tractors, don't matter much when they was built 'cuz the parts are majorily interchangeable.

Its yer tractor, what ever pleases you..... ..respectfully, Dell
