Storm coming in. Gotta put the tractor up. Turn the key on & hit the button..err ruuurrr, err ruuurrr, click, clickety, click! Oh well, time to clean the contacts, install the new "thick as yer thumb" cable & new 11" flat braid. Cleaned all contacts including the starter tranny hole. Hit the button & whirrrr.... no click! Just whirrrr. Went to archives & found 28,000 + entries. Hope y'all don't make me look thru ALL of them. I found one where Dunk ( I think )said "whack it with a hammer". Be my luck, I'd bust the case.

If the battery is dead enough it will just have enough power to "whirr" the starter.Maybe.

1. Starter not turning fast enough to engage Bendix
2. Starter shaft gooked up so Bendix won't engage
3. Flywheel missing teeth
4. Bendix gone (bottom of bell housing).
I'd MAKE SURE she's OUTTA GEAR, and try jumping directly to starter stud with 12V, Just to see if that'll get her attention. If not, you're going to have to pull starter and check out what's going on.
Good luck

problem with bendix, or bendix stuck in ring gear, or bendix has fallen off. RP

That whirrrr don't sound so good.

That sounds like a problem with your bendix.

That whirrrr does mean that it sounds like the starter motor is spinning, and not catching?

Try rocking it in 4th gear a bit, more one way than the other.

Or with the switch OFF turning the engine just a bit with the fan, or any other way.

You may have lost a couple of teeth on your ring gear on the flywheel.

That may get you fired up for the time being.

Even when rocking it in 4th gear, have the switch OFF.

Is it the starter making the whirl or is the motor turning?

it's the starter that whirrrrrs. No clicks or anything... just the sound of the starter turning when I push the button.

LOL! He didn't say where to hit it or how bigga hammer. I have good fuel flow & clean filters. battery has a full charge, & I have plenty of spark. The starter just whirrs away but doesn't seem to wanna connect.

I love it when someone comes to get me because a car won't turn over, and when I get there I don't hear anything at all when the key is turned.

Oftentimes the solenoid is only mildly stuck and can be freed by lightly tapping the starter housing with a broom handle, screwdriver handle, etc.

(Nothing metallic. And not too hard. The magnets in modern starter motors are supposed to be very fragile. I don't know if that's true or not, but discretion, etc.)

If the car DOES start when you tap the starter, the uninitiated think you're a genius. I usually give them a grin and say, "It's all in knowing WHERE to tap!"

I especially enjoy performing this trick for a young woman after her boyfriend has given up and is ready to call a tow truck...nothing like it!
