I may be off my rocker, so I am gonna ask some of the other guys...

I don't know about your cut out, but isn't that just a generator thing, to keep the battery from being over charged?

Do you have fire/volts at the top of the coil? If you do then the problem is in the distrib. somewhere. I'd replace the points and condenser. Condensers do go bad. Coil problem will show itself by running a good while then quitting, then when cooled off it will run again for 30 minutes or so before quitting again. To be sure that the coil pigtail and the other coil contact is makeing good contact, remove the cork gasket under the coil, reinstll the coil and try it.(Put a folded piece of paper under the coil bail to hold the coil snug). What are the points set on? Should be .015...HTH

Broken Record... in reply to Tom N MS, 04-24-2007 18:30:40
Whenever the tractor fails to start, the following test should be one of the first things (if not THE first thing) to try, because it only takes a few seconds and doesn't involve connecting or disconnecting anything; and so it is a VERY efficient use of your time.

Throw the switch without cranking the meter. You should see about 3 amps discharge.

No discharge? Then either the points are bad, there is an open somewhere else in the system, or the points are open. And, they are almost always closed when the engine isn't running.

To make sure, crank briefly. The points should close and the meter show the normal discharge.

Normal discharge? Crank the motor. You should see the ammeter flutter as the points open and close.

Constant reading, no flutter? The points are not opening or there is a short somewhere.

Great advice!

That is the most concise piece of diagnostics I have seen in a long while. It should be made very prominent somewhere, so we can all remember it next time we need it.

Thanks!!

My dad showed me this in 1951.I have posted this often.Watch the ammeter when cranking the engine, if it sits on zero ,go clean the points..
