Long time reader...first time poster. I am interested in experiences with electronic ignition for 8n front mount with 12 volt negative ground. My old points work fine but they are a nuisance. Each spring I find myself replacing points and retiming for plowing. The 12 volt conversion has worked wonderfully...starting issues have become non-existant. I checked the archives but found little to go on. jms

I converted to 12 volt in my 1948 front mount a year ago and as it needed new points already, I put in electronic ignition this winter. I have about 25 hours on it since and it starts better than ever and runs very well. I'm waiting to see how the coil holds up once it gets hot outside as it's been reasonably cool(I live in Minnesota). From my limited experience so far, I'd definitely do it again.

For what it's worth? I put in the 1247 kit (Uses frontmount coil). Worked wonderful for over a yr. than it smoked. Pertronix was good to replace complete kit. I would suggest getting the 1247EXT (Uses a "real round can coil"). If you don't have your primary resistance just right for OEM style square can coil, you could eventually smoke coil & module!!! Lots of potential problems w/12v (14.7v) pumping into that frontmount coil w/out right resistance.

I take it you live in a humid environment or don't have the tractor shedded/ or there are big temp variants? I usually get at minimum 3+ years out of a set of points.. and generally 2 yrs between even regapping them..

it is humid here...n/w Pennsyvania...tractor is under roof but open sides. I suspect my points problems are are related to a rebuilt distributor problem and a funny excentric screw that won't let me open them up for the last .001 to make it not tight .015. But your weather forecast may be on the money...back before the last big flood I used to get about the same response from cars...if they don't run just right...check the points...if burned replace the condenser. My Dad kept a points file and used it whenever he opened up the distributor...Army trained during the last big war. Point (on points)is...all of these problems went away with electronic ignition after they sorted it out. I still drive 77-79 ford pickup trucks...and I only change the points on my old tractors. My first '78 E150 was a nightmare until I bought the after market electronic module and then it ran forever with no problems. I am trying to determine if the electrontics have caught up with the N's It is so nice not to worry about ignition that I am hoping to change it and forget it like I did with the 12V alternator. Points are cool...not difficult but a nuisance....jms

I live in a much dryer environment.. and fl has less of a temp variation.. so our points tend to last alot longer down here. I agree.. If I constantly got weather related points problems.. I'd also be tempted to go electronic fired ..

I have a 8N with side mount distributor with electronic ignition. It has been on the tractor for 8 1/2 years. No problems at all and I am really pleased with it. Tractor has the 12 volt system.

Installed one on my 8N front mount about a year ago. Other that one time when she got real wet in a downpour it has started without a hitch. Worth every penny.

Her: No, honey, it's a plasma generator!

Him: Ignition system!

Her: Plasma generator!

Him: Ignition!
