The starter hole had already been "egged out". The ring gear has been welded in place, & has very little damage on the back side. As you can see from the picture, the barrel assembly is shot & the armature shaft is boogered up some. Should I replace the entire starter, or can I have the shaft replaced when I have the starter rebuilt?

Thanx for your help & patience, Gentlemen..
Poot PS. FO-4 manual says: "disconnect the cables & 2 bolts, & remove the starter".. yeah RIGHT! Well, I'm here ta tellya, it ain't that easy! Even with the hole "wallered out"! LOL

What did ye have to do besides disconnect the cables & 2 bolts, & remove the starter? It is like baseball, just swing at the ball as it goes by ye and knock it out of the park and run around the bases fer a "home run". Everything is "always" easier said than done, ain't it? But the more ye do it the easier it gets, believe me. Do like Dell and Dunk toldd ye, Get the new positive drive type bendix and DO NOT turn the new drive gear before before installing the starter. Good luck, ye can do it.

Poot..... ..ya talkin'bout them BARELY VISIBLE SCRATCHES? on starter armature shaft? Shoot-fire, just a little-bitt of emory-cloth polish'em-up, no problem. (seriously)

I can tell right now, your "removal problem" is you didn't hold yer tongue jess-soo (grin).

Replace yer starter bendix drive with the modern "clutch" style..... ..Dell, the tongue-tied

I think I would just remove the bendix, clamp the starter down, hook the battery to it with a set of jumper cables, and hit the rough spots with a good file, or maybe some sandpaper.

Install a new bendix, and be back in business..

But who knows.. I may just be off my rocker..
