Hey guys, with the help of your post I convinced my wife I needed another tractor. Picked it up today. Gotta have an exhaust manifold(no problem). Bad news- when I got home I noticed the left wheel was acting odd. Got off and shook it - lots of movement. ( why didn't I do this before?). jacked it up and attemped to tighten axle nut. It spins. Remembered reading SCgoatfarmers post a couple days ago.guess I've got the same problem. Need axle and hub. (anyone in middle Ga have good used?) Haven't had time to read manual or go any further with it. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated. I've never changed axles before(in a tractor).

I figgered as much, I wonder if Ron Helton still has both arms, or if one of them got snatched off.

If it was 90% complete, it might have NOT been a parts tractor, but just needed some TLC.

With that kind of play you probably are looking at needing a new hub.

third party image Hub - Rear Axle Hub 8N, NAA, Jubilee. With Studs. (Part No: 8N1171)$59.90

Category: Drive Train
third party image Rear Axle Washer - For model 8N. (price shown is for EACH, minimum Qty is 2. (Enter '2' in QTY box. )
(Part No: 8N4293) $2.28
third party image Axle Shaft Nut, Rear - 1.25", 18 hex. For Models: (8N 1948-1953), (NAA 1953-1955), NAB.
(Part No: 8N4179) $6.64

If you are lucky and the threads on the axel are still good.

If they are to bad for the new nut you might be able to use one of these.

third party image Axle Clamp Lock Nut - Clamp lock nut, rear axle, 1-1\4". For 8N, NAA, Jubilee. This improved nut helps to prevent premature wear on both axle and hub. (The ring on the original type can fall out or rust out which allows the nut to come loose). This nut stays tight! Replaces CBPN-4179-A and 8N4187.
(Part No: LN10-21) $21.98

Congratulations on the purchase.
As for the nut spinning, it's more likely the nut threads are stripped and not the axle. Check that 1st: Few $$ for a nut, Many $$ for an axle. When you get the nut tight, if it wheel is still loose, suspect the hub and replace it before worrying about the axle. Hubs are cheaper than axles. If that doesn't fix it, then change the axle. None of it's too hard to do. Follow the I&T FO-19 (or FO-4 if you have an N) manual for changing brakes, when the brake plate is removed the axle pulls right out of the trumpet. While your that far, check the bearings and seals and R/R as needed. Good luck. Steve
