Looking to see if anyone has a good way to remove powercoat paint. Just bought 6 foot finish mower. It is a Farm King painted green, so you see my problem. The paint (?) is chipped and rusting in places. Can one paint over powercoat paint if it is holding up ok? I mean clean off the rust part, prime, and paint the whole thing? Thanks Joe

I know a little about powder coat. My father in-law has PCP (powder coating Pros) and SBP (sandblasting pros). We scratch each others back you know from time to time. It is a pain in the you know what to get powder coat off. The best way is to have it re cooked then blasted. Other than that just knock off what you can and then prime and paint. Won't look that great but other than recooking it you don't have much a choice. i will run it by him and see what he says. i tend to trust what he does say, He is a chemist by trade/education, smart as a lick. If I can be any further help let me know.

Eastwood sells a solvent that will remove powder coat and just about anything else, but for the size part you are working with it does not make much sense to try and strip it. I vote for the scratch, prime, and paint approach previously suggested. If the powder coat is stuck good, it will make a good base coat, and where it aint it should pop off when you rough it up. A good primer will stick to whatever you have left and give you a consistent surface for your new color.

If you wire brush powdercoat and then prime it, it will take new paint. You actually have a good base coat with it so your machine will be well protected.

Ross I agree the color is WRONG, but the price was good and it REALY is not a john deere! It also cuts very well.

Thanks to all who responded. I will paint over the good parts after sanding and a good coat of primer. In the meantime she is parked out back.

Joe
