At loss... what next?

My 49 8N has lost power and doesn't run smooth anymore. Backfires (spits) when under load. This is a list of what I have done: new key switch, ballast resistor, points, condensor, dist cover, rotor, plugs, plug wires, fresh 93 octane gas, rebuilt carb, new intake gaskets. The only thing I haven't replaced is the coil. Could this be the trouble or has something inside the engine messed up? The tractor was running fine two weeks ago. This just started all at once. Any help would be appreciated...

Can You Isolate the Problem... in reply to LoomismanOBX, 04-29-2007 09:04:53
...to one cylinder?

Try this: carefully and one at a time pull the spark wires (I usually take notes when doing this kind of troubleshooting), then put the engine BRIEFLY under load. Do this with each cylinder in turn, one at a time.

As you put the tractor under load, you should notice a marked difference in performance with one spark wire disconnected, UNLESS it is cutting out on the same cylinder every time AND that cylinder is the one with the spark wire disconnected at the time the engine DOESN'T seem to run worse.

If you find one cylinder that doesn't seem to make much of a differnce whether it is disconnected or not, you've at least isolated the problem to that cylinder, and probably also ruled out a fuel system problem (except maybe cracked manifold, bad manifold gasket, etc.).

A quick easy check of the oil bath breather won't hurt. Could be dry and/or dirty.HTH

If choking it will seem to help I suspect a clogged fuel system. Only way to clean a clogged carburetor is to pull it apart and carefully clean the bottom around the high speed jet and also the spray nozzle that is in the venturi of the intake part of the carburetor.

There is also the possibility that the venturi itself is defective and causeing a vacuum to be in the bowl area of the carburetor. Try removing the high speed needle completely. If that fixes it you can be assured there is a problem with the venturi. Lots of the later venturis are plastic and we all know what time does to plastic.

What RPsays plus before you do a couple of those things. Pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and check for gas flow. It should have a good steady flow for 5 plus minutes. Catch the gas and then look at it to make sure you don't have a lot of junk in it. If you don't have a good flow then check for flow at the fuel line where it hooks to the carb, same 5 minutes. If bad there you have clogged filter from the carb back if good at the crab drain then you may have missed some thing in the carb rebuild which is easy to do.

1, open the main throttle needle on the carb a half turn at a time til she will throttle up good,
2, if that dont help, remove that same needle and the drain plug at bottom of carb, and blow carb cleaner in at top and let it run out the bottom. at least a half of can.
3, still no help, pull the valve covers behind the manifold and watch to see if all valves are moveing with engine running.
if none of this helps post back again. RP

I am beginning to think the carb is the fault. I have never heard of one going bad overnight, but I guess it could happen. The fuel delivery is clean and flows good. When I replaced the manifold gasket, I turned the engine over to see if the valves were working ok and they were. From the posts I read here, it looks like the carb is the fault. Thanks for your help. Will post back when I get a new one installed...
