simple starter maintenance went wrong

I cut 6 acres this weekend and 9N functioned flawlessly. I went to do Dell's tip on loosening the two starter motor bolts and cleaning the gap and the ground wire and two problems developed.
1. I can't get the motor to snug up to the housing. It seems to be stuck and there is a small gap.
2. The brass stud the ground wire connects to had been stripped and now won't tighten up again.
3. Now starter doesn't turn over at all.

Help.

Revised information.

It works and really spins fast, faster than it's ever spun however there is still a slight gap between the starter motor and the housing I can slip pen knife blade in. This doesn't seem quite right.

I fixed the stripped stud by putting a second nut on top and tightening it down.

The gap thing is bothering me though.

Sounds like it's hung up on the edge of the housing at the backside (next to the block/clutch housing?)

It doesn't seem to want to move forward or backward. It's just stuck there. Tractor starts though. Really could use some advice.

When reading my FO4 manual it says the starter should be held on by two caps screws and mine is held on by one cap screw and the other one is a long stud with two bolts on it. That may be the problem, something to do with that stud.
