This past weekend I got in a little more seat time, using an implement I had not seen or used before.
Ground was a bit wet to disc the fields plowed last week, though.

Here is a picture of what my neighbors refer to as their "corn chopper" hooked onto the drawbar of my 51 8N. This is a very heavy implement, I believe to be made by Int. Harvester? Anyone know?

Here is a side view taken before moving onto another strip of corn field.

Here we are working our way down the field. The implement rides up on each "paddle" and drops down hard on the stalks as they are pushed down in front of it. It chops the stalks in about 16" lengths.

A finished contour strip ready for discing/plowing.

Pulling in 1st gear at about 3/4 throttle seemed to work out the best. Each week I am learning a bit more about what the 8N's are capable of, and enjoying the seat time!!---Tim

Tim,

Great photos! I"m really interested in that implement, but don"t quite understand how it works. Is it like the reel of a haybine, but heavy enough to cut/crush the stalks against the resistance of the ground?

Colin--what Allthumbs said in his previous posts is right on the money as far as what I experienced running that chopper for 4 hours.

The blade that was in front of the one that just chopped the stalk seemed to "ride up" on the ground raising the unit a bit and then dropped down allowing the next blade to do it's work.

The Amish were real eager for me to do some more chopping because they said it really made heavy work for a 2 or 3 horse team---

I can't imagine them riding on the top of that chopper behind their horses. That had to feel like they were a hot jumping bean----

I burned 7 gallons of gas in 4 hours using this implement----Tim

Tim, Thanks for the description. Wow. All that hard work made your 8N thirsty! Will you be doing some work for your neighbors as well?

Yes---I am doing some additional chopping and plowing in exchange for the neighbors doing the discing and corn planting on some of my ground. I still have not found that elusive disc yet!!!!---Tim

Colin..I don't remember if it had 5 or 6 blades but as one blade hit the ground the whole unit would raise somewhat depending on the hardness of the ground and the next blade would have the weight falling for the cut. I would guess it weighs 4 or 5 hundred pounds. Before we got a tractor we had a single row cutter pulled by a team of horses. The seat was right above the cutter so you were bounced up and down while the tractor would jerk back and forth. Either way the novelty wears off pretty quick.

I'll bet the ride was not too smooth! Sounds mighty unpleasant.

We had one, called it a 'stalk cutter'. We pulled it with a Farmall B. I think that is where Elvis got the name for his song, "All shook up"! After about 10 hours, it felt like the tractor and me were ready to fall apart.

Allthumbs---your description on using this implement was exactly what I experienced. The Amish that use this piece put a 2x12 on top of the implement and stand on it holding the reins of their team of horses----without a seat belt!!

Yes, the one we had was made by International Harvester.

We had one of them. Usually pulled it in 3rd gear with the TE-20. We used it ahead of the disk.

Steveormary---were you using this in really soft well worked up ground? I felt if I ran in any gear other than 1st, I would have beat the "hadies" out of my tractor---but, I didn't try it in 3rd gear so I can't say from experience---Tim

Ya,we had some sandy ground and our stalk cutter might not have been as heavy. And when I didnt think Dad was looking I would go in 4th for a little ways.

You must have been a "wild one"----I have visions of you pulling this heavy chopper at full throttle in 4th gear and at the same time trying to get the velcro fasteners on your britches pushed back into the fasteners on the pan seat!!!!LOL

Tim,

It wasnt quite full throttle. More like 1/4 throttle. We would run at about 2/3rds thrttle for most work. I never upset a tractor so must not have been too wild.
