Looking for some advice. I have a 49 8n front mount. Steering is very hard and locks up when turning left. Tractor also shimmys when traveling a little faster. I am about to start to take the steering box off and apart and am wondering if there is any advice or tips to look out for. There are two different size rear tires on the tractor, one 11/28 and one 13.6/28, could this be causing my problem or does it still sound like the steering box should be gone through. thank you

Sounds to me like your problem is your upper bearing in your steering sector.

ppm..... ..re: yer lopp-sized reartires, while not quite like yer belchfire V-8 diffy, its generally not good to run major tire-size differences 'cuz it'll work yer diffy spider gears all the time and will eventually make them whine.

Your factory original reartire size was 10-28, re-numbered by gov't safety bureaucrats to 11.2-28 in 1970's. Your 11-28 is already 1-size too large, and the 13.6-28 is 2-sizes too large. (12-28 before re-number) Iff'n the rim-widths were also changed, yer probably ok; iff'n not correct rim-width, yer stiff-walled reartires are gonna be major wear down the center. Probably not a major tire factor in 25yr life of rear ag-bar tires.

Iff'n yer N-Tractor was extensively used as a "plowing" tractor, sometimes they oversized the furrow tire for added traction and to kinda keep the tractor more level so diffy oil don't leak past the seal and greeze the brakes.

Sometimes majorly used oversized ag-bar reartires are viable tire alternative with light-weight low time useage N-Tractors. But BIG reartires add to OVERDRIVE effect of underpowered engine..... ...Dell, who has 14.9-24 ag-bar tires (same outside diameter at 10-28)

Not good to run 2 different sized rears..

now to the steering. if it steers hard.. the sector backlash probably needs to be adjusted.. you have to pul the bolts fromt he round covers and rotate the covers.. however.. do a few tests first.. does the steering wheel 'rise / fall ' out of / into the steering column when you turn lock to lock ( front axle jacked up )? If so.. the top bearing is probably shot from lack of lube.

Look for play in the rest of the steering system.. like tie rod ends.. front hub bearings, draglink ends spindle bushings.. etc.

correct as needed.
